During World War Two, hard-bitten sergeant John M. Stryker (John Wayne) earns the enmity of the recruits he trains for action in the Pacific. New recruit Peter Conway's (John Agar) dislike for his commander turns to respect, however, when the latter saves him from a grenade. The squad are forced to show their mettle when they are sent into Iwo Jima to take Mount Suribachi whilst under constant fire from the Japanese. John Wayne's performance earned him his first Oscar nomination.

Don't spend too long drinking coffee during a battle.
I mainly like John Wayne in westerns and favourites include 'The Shootist', 'Rio Bravo' and 'The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence'. Two of his war films are also in my favourites, 'In Harms way' and this film 'The Sands of Iwa Jima'. Theres no denieing the film is old now, but it certainly stands the test of time due to great performances and a combination of real war time footage edited into the film throughout as well as believable sets and landscapes. John Wayne plays his part especially tough as he trains his troops for combat. The film sits comfortably with another great war film that featured Wayne, 'The Longest day'.

Training to fight the Japanese in the pacific.
This black and white full screen film has John Wayne as a battle hardened veteran training new recruits for the forthcoming campaigns against the Japanese. Whilst appearing hard as nails he does have a hidden heart of gold as he brings them up to speed on what can be expected finishing with the battle for Iwo Jima.
