Anna NeaglePiccadilly Incident [DVD]

WONDERFUL WEEPIE!
Anna Neagle fans will love this 1940s movie, which is produced and directed by her husband, Herbert Wilcox (of course!), who gives her the full glamour treatment in this one - she's never looked so gorgeous and poised, and looks a treat in her Wren's uniform. The black and white print isn't perfect, but it still shows the actors and sets to good effect. I didn't find the bits of scratching too bad.Neagle plays a naval Wren who meets Michael Wilding (of course) during a World War II air raid in London's Piccadilly. They fall in love and marry immediately, but then she goes off to sea and ends up on a desert island with fellow Wren Brenda Bruce, and three sailors, one of whom is very passionate about Neagle. Bereft of the stiff hairdos and harsh red lippie of the day, the ladies look absolutely gorgeous, in a very natural way, like Swinging Sixties girls (a first for Neagle). And the plot almost gets a bit raunchy at this stage (almost, but not quite - a shame, really).Meantime, back in London, Wilding thinks she's dead .... Oops, I mustn't reveal any more. Let's just say you'd better have a box of tissues at hand!Sadly, we only get a couple of minutes of the inimitable Irish actress, Maire O'Neill (Abbey Theatre), who took my breath away reciting a few lines of Shelley's 'Love's Philosophy'. This lady was a genius, but never got enough to do in British movies.

Great film; appalling transfer!
In its day, this film was a huge box office hit and it is not hard to see why. If you are reading this review, then you almost certainly know it is a very good film. However, the purpose of Amazon reviews is to review the actual product as much as the film. Sadly, the transfer is just dreadful: specks and flickers throughout, parts where the film looks like it has been stuck together with sellotape, dreadful lack of contrast between blacks and whites, etc. Whilst it is admirable that Network are releasing lots of British films that have not previously been available, their quality standards leave a lot to be desired. I have purchased a number of their releases and they have ALL left a lot to be desired, with no evidence of any attempts to restore or remaster.Film: **** out of ***** Transfer: * out of *****

Michael Wilding the handsom officer falls in love with Anna Neagle
Michael Wilding the handsom officer falls in love with Anna Neagle. They meet in wartime and he invites her to his place and they get to know each other. She entertains the troops. Being wartime, a great deal of separation is involved. After then having being married she is posted to the Pacific.Tragic news comes and he is devastated. Anna Neagle and Michael Wilding good acting gives how relationships can change also due to the affects of War. A good film to wach is another Anna Neagle film: The Man Who Wouldn't Talk, being a good actress, and starring Antony.Quale has is defence lawyer.

Sentimental
I enjoyed it because of sentimental memories. I saw the film as a child with my mother after the war. The stars were popular in those days mostly Anna Neagle. It was a different world. But it is worth seeing for anyone who wants to get a feel for the atmosphere of those days.

Old Film Set In The 1940's.
Another great film from the Neagle Wilding partnership, throughly enjoyed watching it again after so many years.

Glad I saw it again but may have limited appeal
I saw this film years ago at the pictures and remember crying a lot. It is good but now unfortunately it seems very dated which is not surprising really.

Absolute frustration
On receipt of the DVD, the opening intro read “not viewable in your area” or words to that effect. It was mailed from UK. As a result I was unable to enjoy it for a 2nd time and was highly disappointed..
