Amazingly effective!
I chucked in 2.5kg of cheapo briquettes as a test yesterday (Pro Q - same as a WSM, but half the price :-) ). Closed the bottom vents, opened the top only a smidgen. It hit the set 180f and just stayed there! rock solid. So I then upped it to 190 and left it. 7 hours steady temp until the fuel was gone, and that was briquettes I accidentally spilt some water on.I made a simple lipo power adapter by using a spare 5000Mah 3s battery I had kicking around. Works perfectly. Could do witha UK source for the extra probes that are not rediculously priced.Internet and wifi access works perfectly. Alexa interface is fun but she insists on using degrees C when the device and apps are set to F (American recipies so I've "gotten" used to F for smoking now)I give it 4 out of 5 as the fan unit feels cheap and not very robust, and the kit shoudl be £199 at best, not £299, but, I paid, and I love it.

This product has potential, unfortunately I had to return it. Functionally it seems to work well but the PID settings for my grill (XL Big Green Egg) could be much better. There was a lot of unnecessary oscillation before the temperature leveled out. This is of course my opinion as an Electrical Engineer having programmed many PID loops. Also, for the price the probes seemed a bit cheesy and did not have a high enough temperature rating for all grilling applications. With everything said above after 3 or 4 cooks I was pleased enough to keep the unit.Unfortunately on my next cook the unit would not stay powered on. I had to wiggle the connector and then not touch it to get the power to stay on. Clearly the connector was bad or something came loose. At this point after 1 week of ownership I decided to return the unit.At this price point the unit should have better probes and be of a more solid construction. I have no problem shelling out 3 or 4 hundred bills for a cool piece of electronics but it needs to last....

I like it but...
I like it but...The set up is very easy, connecting to WiFi was easy. The probes that connect this; the braided cable probesare alright, I have had to send one back due to it coming apartwhere the probe and cable connect.I have not tried the other style probes with supposedly betterinsulation on the cable.I have been using the Flame Boss now for about 5 months, the controlon it is great for the smoker. It held temperature on mine for 27 hours (250 deg). The app is easy to see and easy figure out what is what on display. The knock ----When I powered it up 3 cooks ago, it needed a version update on the Flame Boss itself.Ever since the update it has not operated the same as it did when I first purchased it.For some reason the Flame Boss screen itself, after a few minutes of being poweredup starts to show pixels over the indications. You can still tell what the indication is, butthis should not be happening. Also after the update, when looking at the iPhone or iPad app, it doesn't show real time anymore.I have to back out of the cook display and reload it each time to get a refreshed indication. This gets very frustrating.Since I have had it as long as I have I can't simply return it anymore through Amazon. So therefore I am trying to decide if the problems I am having warrant going through thehassle of trying to deal with the manufacturer or just live with the issues since it does controlvery well and maybe after the next revision download it will be working like it did.If it wasn't for the indication and app issues I am having I would give this product2 thumbs up and 5 stars. Unfortunately I can only give it 3 stars -- It's "just - okay"

Must have for any slow cooker or any cooker for that matter!
Love this thing. Holds temperature to within a few degrees once up and going. I also love that it controls the temperature on the way up - so I no longer have to worry about overshooting the temperature! With the convector in my egg, it controls temperature as good or better than my oven! It was a bit tricky setting up WiFi but once up, its great! Ironically this allows hand off worry free control of egg, but I find my self obsessing over it even more... just because I can! Love all that data!!!

Worth the cost
First of all, shoutout to the Flame Boss customer service department. Somehow my unit arrived (in an Amazon box with two other items I purchased) with the Flame Boss packing open and the AC adapter and mounting fasteners missing. After submitting an inquiry online, a rep emailed me and said they had the missing components on their way to me. Arrived two or three days later.Speaking to the controller, first trial run I ran hot. Tried to hold 350 in my WSM 18.5" for chicken quarters. The controller didn't seem to like the high temp set point, or maybe environmental conditions, as it continually detected lid open events and turned the fan off. It was a cold, rainy, windy day, which might be a factor. I simply turned the delay time for lid open events down to a few seconds to try to keep the fire stoked, as I sat around 325ish for the whole smoke. I will keep experimenting to see if I can figure out the false lid open event reporting. Not too worried about high temp performance, as I'm going to be around my smoker if just running some chickens for an hour or two.Evaluating the important point: I've done a few runs at 225 using lump charcoal in my WSM and I must say it's surprisingly impressive how accurately this controller dials in. I don't doubt that it's more accurate at holding a temp than some ovens that vary 5-10 degrees between heating cycles.Setup is fairly simple and straightforward. Wifi interface and data compilation is really cool and fun, even though not really necessary. It definitely proves this thing works.Considering this thing cost more than the purchase price of my WSM, it took me a while to pull the trigger and buy. Now that I've run it a few times, I would totally buy again. I bought this so I can put butts or a brisket on and go to bed and sleep 8-10 hours worry free. I will not be losing any sleep with the Flame Boss in control.Would recommend.

Bought this to use with my new ceramic kamado grill ...
Bought this to use with my new ceramic kamado grill that I got for Father's Day to help regulate the low smoking. Once I figured out to let the fan do the work it revolutionized the simplicity of smoking. Yes its expensive but so is time and headache of moderating the smoke/heat. The other beauty is that you can keep track of your food temp and grill temp and monitor it on your phone so no worries if you have to leave the house momentarily. Yes, there's a learning curve but once you figure it out for your situation, it's become seamless set up, functionality and use.

Game changer
Fantastic addition to my Weber Smokey mountain. Love being able to sleep through the night as I cook and have an alarm wake me up if the temp drops too low. So far when this has happened it’s because the charcoal is almost completely burnt out. It maintains temperature really well, although it must be noted that you should get your cooker up to temp or close to it rather than relying on the device to bring cooker up to cooking temps. It seems to chew through the charcoal a little faster than cooking manually too. Setup is a little bit of a struggle but not too bad. Once running it has been smooth. I’m still not sure how to end a cook and then start a new one. The device does it automatically on different days but if you do two cooks in one day I’ve had to delete the previous cook and then start a new one. This is only a problem if you want to keep all your cooks in your history. The software allow you to write notes with each cook which is fantastic to record details of your cook to refer to on later cooks! So far the cooks I have done using the flame boss have come out great! My theory is that the fan keeps that smoke flowing over the meat at a greater rate giving the meat a better smoke flavour. I’ve read that Aaron franklin states that that the smoke flowing over the meat is why he prefers to smoke with offset cookers. All I know is that my cooks have been more relaxing and the food has improved.Edit: Just bought a battery pack from Flameboss so now I can control temps on cooks when I dont have a plug in. Fantastic.

Control in the Palm of your Hands
I was torn between four and five stars... the functionality is great, but only through medium heat - but that is mostly why someone would buy it. I’m okay with that. The iPhone app interface is very good... it could be better, but it’s good. The setup is a bit tricky, but I got it done on my second attempt. The temperature is easiest to set using the app. The app is quite good, but I wish the alarm would ring on the app as well as on the device - isn’t that the whole point of having an app?Anyway, all in all, it is great. Very reassuring to cook low and slow on my Big Green Egg with this.

Overpriced
The controller app on your phone does not connect directly to the controller. It uploads data to a server and the app pulls the data from the server. This requires your smoker be in range of your home WiFi and have internet access and your phone have signal as well just to use the app with smoker. So if you think your going to a picnic or campground and gonna have wireless controlling and still see pit temp over night or quick check temps from bed while camping....nope. This loses all control from the phone and loses all the bells and whistles as soon as your smoker gets out of your home wifi. Glad I spent the extra money on the 300 just so I could monitor multiple meat temps over time. I can’t do that without the internet and a WiFi network. I use my smoker where there is no internet and they haven’t designed it to directly connect to the phone. Unbelievable !!!!

Best pit temperature controller ever.
I upgraded from a Stoker after losing data from the terrible PitPal app I was using on the 4th. I bought a CyberQ WiFi but it wasn't smart enough to connect to my mesh WiFi network, so back it went. These issues ultamately led me to this controller and I could not be happier, this thing is awesome! The Flame Boss besides having a much cooler name was simple to setup and 8-9 hours into my cook has kept the temperature of my pit darn near perfect. The app is easy to use and easy to share controls with others. If you're on the fence about getting a pit temperature controller or choosing which one to get, then do yourself a favor and pick this one up. It makes long overnight cooks so much easier. I've combined it with a 12v 2a solar trail camera battery and it's freakin' amazing.

Meat and Pit probes are AWFUL quality. Cheap. Horrible.
Listen - at this price point, the pit temp probe and meat probe are just too cheaply made. For over $300 you wouldn't expect a meat probe to break during washing it the first month you have it.The pit temp probe is already having breaks in the wire near the probe causing it to short out and the unit isn't even a year old yet. I've taken really good care of this unit, haven't been hard on it at all - yet all the probes you stick in the grill are literally falling apart. The Cyber-Q probes were way more sturdy and of more obvious quality. The app, dashboard, and logic that runs the pit itself seem to be good and better than the cyber-q, but the quality of the probes is so subpar that I really don't think it's worth the money even a little bit.

Wish I would have had this years ago it works great on my Vision grill/smoker I set the pit temp at 250 degree and it went no higher than 252 degree it sure save a lot of time not having to check the pit temp all the time. You can program it into your cell phone, tablet, computer, and control everything off of them if needed. I love it and have recommended it to friends. Thanks W.M.

Love the Flame Boss 300
Absolutely love this thing. Was much simpler to setup than its major competitor. From opening the box, power up, entering settings, downloading app and get web logon it wasn't 30 minutes.First smoke after receiving it was 4 butts (30#) overnight smoke. After I got the fire started the second time (my fault), put the butts on, started up the FB300. Was so nice to be able to go visit some friends for several hours, whip out the phone to check everything but because it was a new tool kept checking progress on and off until midnight. Did raise temp up 5 degrees for the last 2 hours but did not have to fret for the 12hrs. Kept the KJ on the target temp and could monitor meat temp. Probably going to get the Y cable.Ordering on Amazon easy peasy, delivered 2 days later without issue.

Love this device
Love this device. It makes cooking on my Primo Oval a cinch though my friends all say it's "cheating." I put a brisket or pork shoulder on at night, and it holds the temp +/- 2 degrees for 8-10 hours while I sleep. I can put something on the pit, leave for an afternoon softball game and monitor the cook from the fields, even shutting things down if I need to. Maybe it is cheating but I'd buy this device again.

Promising but needs work...under perfect conditions it delivers great temp control.
Performance overall is 4.5 stars but due to the poorly designed iOS app and one issues I ran in to, it is 3.5 for now. I will update my rating when the app is fixed. Setup was not simple and the firmware updates were very slow to download from their system (I have a 1gbps connection). The iOS app doesn’t allow for you to create a cook, it does it automatically whether or not you are cooking. Sometimes the temperature chart shows some ridiculous temp range like 1376 degrees to 0 which makes the chart impossible to read and you cannot pinch and zoom or manually control that. The app is also laggy and is not providing real time temperature readings. On one of my cooks, I set the temp to 260, placed the probe on the same rack as the meat. Well apparently the system was too efficient at detecting the cooler temps of the meat and ran my smoker in to burn mode (300+). Not sure if using the meat probe would have allowed the controller to run normally since it would have two temp reference points but the meat was small and I did not require probes for it.The other problem is short length of the probe cables. Waayyy too short.
