Q: Why does the power switch not shut it off when powered through usb? is my unit faulty?

It's not unit faulty. The USB power supply is not controlled by the switch, it is not monitor related.

Q: Does the hdmi out port also contain the cameras audio signal or is it just the video signal?

Audio signal is sent out too and can be monitored through the audio meters on the portkeys.

Q: Does this work with the canon 40d?

If you have an HDMI output it will work, even if its mini or micro just need the right adapter.
