Acceptably quiet when set to noisy but effective mode
My experience of this extractor fan is exactly what I expected. When you install it you have two ways wire it, either for silent running, or making more noise but with more oomph - sucking out more air from your bathroom. I think it is reasonable to describe the silent mode as silent. If you put your head next to it then you can hear it, but really under normal use conditions you don't know it's on. However, the amount of air extracted on silent running is just too weak. And this brings you to the real question about this fan. When you wire it to extract an acceptable amount of air how noisy is it? The answer is simple - less noisy than a standard fan. On this evidence alone it's a sensible purchase. I think a good description would be "fairly quiet".What else is there to say? Well firstly, I was able to install this fan myself. I installed the one that it replaced, which was a Vent Axia I bought about 5 years ago that itself replaced a no-name-brand fan that was excessively noisy. The old Vent Axia was noisy but effective. You could hear it throughout about half the house when it went on. This new silent fan you can only hear inside the bathroom. You can't even hear it when you stand outside the bathroom with the door shut. All of these fans have had easily understandable wiring that is clearly marked and described in the instructions. One slightly tricky thing was that on my old Vent Axia the three mains wires (marked L, LS and N) were in a different order, but fortunately senility hasn't set in to such a point where I'm unable to contend with a minor difference like this. Finally, it's built to a reasonable standard. The plastic is very thin, but you never touch them when in use so I guess this doesn't make any difference.

Great product
As a general rule I find bathroom fans rather annoying and intrusive so I was keen to try this one out. It is not silent. It has two speed settings and they affect the noise level. I found the slowest speed to be very quiet indeed but I felt that the extraction rate was then too low for my modest sized bathroom (6ft x 8ft). The higher speed had a more acceptable (though still a little low) extraction rate but the noise level was greater. On balance it was even then still noticeably quieter than many fans and it also looks good. I have mine connected via an automatic movement detector so it must operate when anyone enters the room, even at night, but the fan cannot be heard in adjacent rooms. I definitely recommend this fan but would advise first checking whether the extraction rate is suitable for the intended application.

Suitable for a small bathroom without a shower
I have this in my En Suite which has a powerful shower which does steam up the bathroom really quick. Using this Extractor fan - on silent mode it is very quiet but not good enough to clear the moisture in the air. I changed the settings to full speed and extended the timer and it does eventually clear the bathroom but the walls and doors are soaking, you cant use the mirror for a long time.I would recommend it for a cloakroom toilet or bathroom without a shower perhaps but not for a shower room. I will be buying a better one now before my en-suite gets ruined by the water and I will probably put this one in the cloakroom toilet downstairs.Update Jan 16: This fan has just died! Its basically not up to a steamy bathroom and they aren't that quiet on max speed which they need to run at!

Quiet and effective
Easy to install and is very quiet. Much better than the old version at extracting the steam when using the shower

It works.
Not silent. Seems to do the job. Is it lasts the 10 years of the last one, i'll be happy.

21 months & now faulty
The media could not be loaded. I have one of these. I installed it in the ceiling 21 months ago & set it to the high speed, I also removed the 'backdraft flaps' to avoid any problems with them not working or jamming as they seemed a bit flimsy. The previous fan (not a vent-axia) had been in use for approximately 20 years and still operated but the bearings were becoming noisy . This new VENT-AXIA Silent fan has had very little use as it is installed in the family bathroom which is rarely used. So, after 21 months of little use it has stopped working. On the high speed setting it starts and after a couple of seconds just hums and the fan rotates at approximately 1 rev/5 seconds. The low speed setting seems ok. 21 Months!! There is no customer service email address for VENT-AXIA in CRAWLEY, so I now have to find time to telephone them and probably post it back at my expense. Very disappointing, I was expecting a quality product. Please feel free to comment on this review VENT-AXIA.

You have to choose between 'Silent' and 'Fan': you don't get both
I bought the VentAxia Silent Fan for a small shower room (about 6m sq). As it's an ensuite, the 'quietest fan on the market' sounded appealing. It's fairly easy to wire up and adjust, and the first of the two settings is indeed very quiet - so much so that my electrician left it running without realizing after he installed it. The downside is that this setting is absolutely useless for extraction: running it for 30 minutes after the shower was turned off doesn't clear the steam or even make a significant difference. I now have it on the second setting, which improves the extraction rate a little. The downside is that on this setting it's not much quieter than a standard extractor, and doesn't perform any better. To sum up, you have to choose between 'Silent' and 'Fan': you don't get both together.
