The Whale / A Bright New Boise Paperback – September 30, 2014

I could identify with so much with these characters in both the play and the film! It's great, but tough!

The pathos and drama of The Whale encourages me to watch how the movie adaptation depicts the action in the play. A Bright New Boise also depicts scenes of religious zealotry and searches for meaning.

Samuel D. Hunter is one of the greatest contemporary playwrights. These two plays stand out on their own, but also predict what will be an incredibly successful career for Hunter.

This was a fantastic play of great proportions and would recommend to any of those who enjoy splendid writing and drama.

Two extraordinary, complex and thought provoking plays. The MacArthur folks called it right!

Great play.

Schematically, these are very similar plays. They also share a lack of depth and angst which the stories and characters call out for.

I thought that this would be a novel based on the play, but it is the actual play. As someone who normally doesn't like to replace, I found this absolutely fascinating. I was hooked from the very start and could picture what was going on in my head. I'm excited to see the movie. I would recommend for any reader.

Das Stück wurde nun schon so oft in Amerika aufgeführt, der Film war in aller Munde (allein durch die Oscars), da wurde es Zeit, den Text auch mal zu lesen. Wirklich ein Meisterwerk! Hat mich umgehauen und recht sprachlos zurückgelassen. Ich hoffe, der Film ist mindestens halb so gut. Großes Kompliment an den Autor!

The pair of plays here are clearly Hunter wresting with the intricacies of familial disconnect, generalised faith, and religion. But ultimately both plays are unsatisfying, and frankly filled with dislikable characters.

Two plays which are essentially the same. Alienated parent, clever offspring, religious sect. Obviously a script is not a performance but I don't see either play as anything special..
