Are the led lights automatically ran or is there an option to have off?

Uuumm... I'm NOT sure what LEDs have to do with a listing for a COVER.. but.. no.. leds are white n blue.. u CAN also buy vinyl to change color of LEDs though (I got gold)

Is the real thing the same as the picture, and can it provide comprehensive protection for the PS5 console?

Oh yes. It's every bit as shiny as it's picture. You're going to like how you're PS5 is going to look with this exterior enhancement. And they got it in silver too.

Do they really help with cooling?

The way the game console was built it pulls air in through the front vents wrapping along the top. And pushes hot air out the back. Adding plates with added vents on the side where the fan is located only helps as one side is also pulling in air as the other expels. Nothing wrong with added ventilation.
