I must start off by saying just a couple things: (1) I've been writing songs for 20 years. (2) I took 2 years of music theory in college.That being said, I've always prided myself in my ability to identify which chords fit into whichever key in playing in. Even still, on many occasions, I've found myself stumped on where to go for a bridge, pre-chorus, etc. This tool is great. It allows me to not have to repeatedly access my theory knowledge when I'm on a creative streak. It's also substantial in size.When I ordered the decoder and book, I was thinking the decoder was pocket sized. No. In fact, I love that it's significantly larger. It's very easy to read, durable, folds into its own stand in the back so it's very easily seen, and even makes it so easy to write a key change into a song with a simple turn of the wheel.Honestly, I thought this would be kind of helpful here and there, but I'm really excited at how much more useful it is than I had anticipated.So if you're a guitar player or songwriter from a beginner to very experienced (we all start somewhere) this tool will be so tremendously handy.**I was NOT paid to review this product. Received this product the next day early (today) after making the purchase! This musical aide came packaged extremely well and is easy to follow at a glance for getting started. I plan to read the entire manuals while holding my guitar so I can put things together in a practical sense. The materials are top quality and is written very well. I'm sure with allotted time spent with these aides and lots of practice, I will finally figure out the CAGED system and understand the circle of fifths. It only gets better from here! This circle of fifths decoder clears up keys in a graphic and easy to understand way. If you have ever been intimidated by music theory as I have been for so many years, this tool will help you understand why what you were playing sounds good! This can be invaluable to future song writing ideas! The book which comes with it is a rich source of chord, scale and key ideas. There’s even an easy to understand section on jamming with others! Either the book or the decoder alone would be worth the price but combined it’s a value driven package which I know will be helpful to my continued growth as a song writer!

This rather wonderful little piano/keyboard chord compass makes it a doddle to find major, minor and diminished chords from any root note (including sharps and flats) so that their triads and seventh variations can be determined with little effort.It couldn’t be easier as all one has to do is slide the slider on the back along to whatever root note one wishes to find these chords for, and then it’s all worked out in a nice, easy and colourful arrangement with everything clearly indicated and labelled, along with root, minor 3rd, diminished 5th, 5th, minor 7th, 7th and octave colour-coded highlights.Easy-to-understand instructions come with the compass, but it’s super easy to work out anyway so they’re not really needed. Saying that, a quick overview will likely get one up to speed a little quicker.It’s about A5 size so small enough to be easily transportable, but yet still large enough to be easily readable. Also, with the aid of a pen or pencil pushed through the hole at the bottom right-hand corner it’ll stand upright as well (or can just be propped up against something). Also, with the hole it could be attached to a music stand and left hanging for the times when it’s needed to remind one of some chord or other.There’s really not much else I can add here apart from to say it’s great for many beginner and intermediate musicians (and a possible convenient reference for some advanced ones too), and very much aids learning, quick identification and retention of chords. Because of it’s size it can easily sit nearby to where one is playing or composing, and can be quickly grabbed or looked at where necessary.For the chords it’s used for (which is a great range of probably the most used), I can’t think of an easier way to quickly determine them. Very much recommended, and even at my level it’s a joy to use (and much better and more convenient than internet or book searches or relying upon memory where chords haven’t been used for a while).
