Q: Why all the false alarms? Cleaning does no good. We're ready to smash ours.

Reviews are closed because of "suspicious review activity" unless you are a verified purchaser. I bought mine at Costco. If you like being woken up for no reason at 3 am, this is the product for you. They go off randomly, though generally while you are asleep, throughout their lifetime (battery dies long before 10-year span also). I have gotten multiple replacements from the manufacturer to no avail. They all eventually go bad. Yes, I clean them - I use compressed air - and they still go off randomly. When they won't shut up at 3 am, you can break off the little tab on the back and move the lever to deactivate - after which time the smoke alarm is FOREVER deactivated, even if you move the switch back. What a great design decision that was. How long will it be before someone driven insane by these things takes a high-capacity magazine gun to the manufacturer? Your guess is as good as mine.

Only two years? You were fortunate. All six that I bought started false alarming within a month and were all six in the trash before a year was up.

Q: Is there a trick to getting these to activate? seems like many of the ones i order arrive doa.

Yeah, they should come on when you lock them into the mounting ring. Test with the test button. If they don’t come on, call for warranty replacement. 1-800-323-9005

Q: Is this ionization or photoelecyric sensor?

No This battery-powered smoke detector requires no rewiring and no electrician to install. Simply mount it on a wall or ceiling using the versatile twist-lock mounting bracket. An end-of-life signal will notify you when the detector is nearing expiration.
