Q: why does it say left do i need to buy two or can one box work as a unit or do i need a minimum of two boxes

You definitely need to buy a left and right monitor. They sound pretty good. I've had them for a little less than a year now. Can't really do a full mix down on them but they have good bottom and pretty clean sound. To answer ur question again tho, yes but the right monitor as well.

Horizontal. The wave patterns are all set up for it to be horizontal.

Q: If i buy 2 units will be work like left and right?

You have to buy the specific left and right monitor. Having two left monitors will not work.
