Great for my situation, your mileage may vary depending on planned usage
I'm giving this item 5 stars for my application, but I'll include my thoughts on it overall so that others using it for various reason will have some feedback. My situation called for a way to remotely control the volume of a device (in my case a computer), and this item worked very well for that application. If you're looking for a high-end piece of audio cable, then you're not viewing the correct item. If you just want an in-line solution for volume control, this is a great cable. There was some degradation in sound quality, but it was minimal enough that I didn't mind. If anything, it just sounded slightly muffled, but not enough to make anyone upset for general audio usage. If I was adding this to some high-quality audio setup like a home theater or stereo system, I'd probably look elsewhere. For things like mobile audio, computer speakers (not media center setups), I think this is a great, inexpensive solution.Physically, for those wondering, the control piece is located on the far end near the female side of the plug (a few inches from the female jack). I had thought the control would be somewhere in the middle of the line, but thankfully it was on one of the ends. The control portion itself is a little smaller than quarter coin sized, maybe a half inch thick including the clip. Speaking of the clip, it's not exactly designed for heavy usage. It's small, and can be bent/snapped off under pressure. In my case I didn't need it, so this wasn't a concern, but for people wanting to clip it to their clothes or other items, you'll find that it may not work well depending on your application. I believe it would be fine for general clothing attachment, but thicker objects like straps and such may be a challenge. The cable is thin, so durability may be an issue for people wanting to use this in an active situation. I'm guessing it won't hold up to lots of tugging and pulling. As for the controls, they're nice and simple. The one thing this doesn't have is a "lock" option. Meaning you can easily bump the wheel-style volume adjustment, or knock the switch from stereo to mono, accidentally. Again, in my case this wasn't a problem, but an active user who might bump or move it frequently might find it too easy to accidentally change the volume or audio output switch. The wheel is "recessed" in the sense that it's not sticking out above the control piece, so casual nudges would probably be fine. I don't think I'd trust it shoved into a pocket or something that may experience rubbing though, unless I wanted to have my volume randomly changing. So my opinion, summed up: Great item for my situation, which involves a static application where I permanently attached the control to the side of an object and hid the wires. Worked exactly as I hoped, and a good price.

Works great
My Emerson TV does not have a headphone jack, so I adapted the Audio out to my earphones, but I could not control the volume, this extension with volume control gives me ability to control the volume. The volume switch is located at the end near the female end and the male end plugs into my audio out adapter.

Long Earphone extension good for Hotel USE!
I works well to listen to T.V. in hotels without waking my husband. The only defect was the Mono Stereo switch was not connected. Looks like it fell out during packaging. But I inserted it and seems to be working ok now.

Has stood up to regular use & abuse; uneven stereo balance at low volumes; stereo/mono switch handy
I have used this cable on a daily basis for several months, moving it back and forth between my PC and my TV, coiling and uncoiling the cable, and making lots of use of the volume control, and it's still going strong. I even once tripped on the cable while it was plugged into the side headphone jack on my TV, and the cable's 3.5mm connector got weirdly tweaked and bent. I figured that was it for the cable, but I was able to just bend the connector back into shape, and the cable has continued working like nothing ever happened — impressive.I've also used the mono/stereo switch more often than I thought I would. It's great for fixing all those incorrectly mastered "my left ear enjoyed this" YouTube videos. Unfortunately, like others reported, the switch hat comes off extremely easily. I was planning on super-gluing mine to the switch, but before I got a chance, it fell off while in use or transit and completely disappeared. Not a huge deal, as the switch can still be actuated with, e.g., the tip of a pen, and arguably it's nice that now it can't be accidentally switched to mono without me realizing it.Really the only other negative of the cable is that, again, like others have reported, at very low volumes, the stereo balance becomes uneven. While you turn the volume wheel down at that range, the audio will "pan" pretty extremely to one side and back, depending on where you leave the dial. In practice, this is not that big a deal, since I rarely want to turn the volume that low unless I'm muting the sound altogether (which, unlike some passive volume controls, this cable _does_ let you do).My two previous (non-extension-cable) stereo 3.5mm passive volume controls, which were a Radio Shack one that developed the typical scratchiness and intermittent connectivity problems of cheapo volume pots, and a Shure one that worked perfectly (unlike Shure's current-production model, judging from reviews), but unfortunately fell out of my pocket while away from home, did not suffer from that problem of uneven left-right response at low volumes. That's the main reason I gave this cable 4 stars rather than 5.I'm very sorry to see this cable is no longer available, as I've liked mine so much that I was about to buy a second one. There's also no "Alert Me" option, which would seem to imply it's not just temporarily out of stock. I did some keyword searches, but there doesn't appear to be any comparable replacement product on Amazon that combines a long extension cable with a volume control and stereo/mono switch. Bummer.

Volume is too quiet and can't be made louder
The sound you get is not loud and can not be turned up - just down. No matter how loud I turned up the tv the volume in the headphone was EXACTLY the same low sound. The headphone without this cord is louder. And with the 40 day return policy I'm stuck with it. I needed an adapter to use headphones, by that time it was a week past the return window.

So Far So Good
Bought this mainly to use on my PS4 controller and PC. This is much much easier way to adjust the volume when using earphones/headphones while playing a game without having to access the setting to change the volume level (PS4). Had it for about a month and a half, almost every day use with so far no problems. The length of cord is plenty long enough. A little too long for me. It does have a clip on the back to clip it somewhere on clothes or wherever. Luckily, I am not experiencing some issues others are, as of now. I believe this is for sound to ears only (not for voice).

Not worth it
I wouldn't waste my money on this again as its performance is minimal and poor. The volume adjustment "wheel" makes poor contact and takes multiple "turns" to get stereo sound. Usually only one speaker side works until it finally kicks in. The control box is simple cheep in quality. I will say it came packaged well and shipped well but that is all I can recommend on this product.
