Great water filter for removing sediments
This is the second of these I have purchased, this one to replace the older one which had been in use for about 15 years. I tried other filters before but have quite a lot of sediment from my well which can block other "whole house" filters in as little as 4 hours. Not using a filter causes dripping faucets, clogged sprinklers etc so is not an option. To be clear, there is no lifetime product, eventually the "self cleaning" system, which uses valves, will fail, and the filter will eventually become clogged. I was able to deep clean the filter by dismantling it twice, but the leaking valves caused me to eventually replace the filter. If you have less sediment that could be decades away.As a replacement incredible easy to install, although the new unit looked identical it was 1/2 inch taller so I did have to move the bracket up, but the whole install was less than 15 minutes. If this is a new installation you will need a plumber unless you are comfortable with plumbing in 3/4 or 1 inch pipes. The control unit simply plugs in and in 15+ years no issues with it. You can control how often it self cleans, the default is 7 days and for me I had to slowly increase the frequency as the years went by ending up with a daily clean. The new unit is back to 7 days, so yes they eventually will clog up. I also noticed an immediate improvement in water taste with the new unit.Overall I would highly recommend this filter. 5 stars!

A reliable, effective remedy for poor municipal water quality
For some reason, there is something in our local municipal water supply in Loudoun County, Virginia, that causes us real health problems. Seven years ago, we bought one of these units and it was literally like night and day for us. It removed the chlorine and chlorine by-products and other trace impurities in the water that caused us harm and reliably served us for the next seven years. We moved to a new home about 5 minutes away on the same water system and our health issues returned. I bought a second one of these for our new home and again, it is literally night and day difference in the quality of the water. This Whirlpool WHELJ1 Central Water Filtration System is very effective and reliable. If you are handy, you can install it yourself but if not, then get a professional to install it for you.It comes with excellent, clear instructions, a bypass valve connection, and requires a drain for its periodic self-cleaning feature. By default, it will flush out any sediment and other buildup every two weeks at 1AM. You can change the time and frequency of the cleaning cycle. Because it is self-cleaning, it is maintenance free. It is designed to last about 10 years for whole home central water filtering. Take the cost of this over ten years, and add to that the fact that there are no filters to buy or change over the life of the product, and you find that this is a reasonably priced solution.I highly recommend this product and will buy a new one the next time we have to move. It's that good!

Works great, but it needs to be replaced every 4 years.
First, I do want to emphasize that this Whirlpool Central Filtration System works great. However, the first one I purchased lasted just over 4 years and the second one I purchased lasted almost exactly 4 years to the day. I just ordered my third one. We are on well water, so it is a hard working filtration system. Just be prepared, if you are on well water, that the useful life may be only about 4 years.

Great Water Filter
Display was damaged when I received but Whirlpool customer service replaced it under warranty and I'm now up and running!Been through one two-week cycle and can tell the water pressure, softness, and filter is much better than it was with two regular filters parallel.

Completely changed the water
I have a deep drilled well at my cabin in the mountains of North Georgia. The water was very high in iron to the point of smelling and tasting like iron. The toilet tanks looked like they had mud in them after a while and left red stains. I like this style unit because it's easy to install and does a self back flush to regenerate the filter. After hooking up the unit and doing a back flush I started using the water. As is normal with this type of filter there was residual carbon that came out. I made sure to open the tub first to flush out the carbon as not to clog the toilet valves of faucet screens. The difference after running about 20 gallons of water through the filter was day and night. I was a bit skeptical but very pleasantly surprised. The water is crystal clear and has no smell of iron or anything else. Then I did a taste test. Mind you we only drank bottled water at the cabin and even used it for coffee the iron and residue was so bad. The water is not only clear and had no smell at all but actually tastes good and is drinkable now. Not sure if it's effective on all water issues but it worked very well for mine.

Original Unit worked well for 15 years
This filter system works very well. My original unit was installed by the previous homeowner but worked very well until the control board failed. I contemplated replacing just the control board but based on the age of the unit I decided to replace the entire unit. For me the installation was very easy since the new unit and the old unit were exactly the same. Bur even a new installation is not that difficult if you have basic plumbing skills. Keep in mind that you need a access to drain near the installation to allow the unit to flush and recharge the filter media. The unit uses and discharges supply water to clean the filter media. Even though it is not necessarily easy to see, the unit does come with pretty much everything you need to install except for the direct connection to your existing water lines. I used sharkbite fittings and PEX tubing and then just plugged in the AC power supply. Programming is easy. If you're not sure have a plumber install it for you.
