Could this be used on dirt berms to prevent erosion?

Mesh is too wide to be effective for that application. Better used for mild slopes as a short term solution. Will last about 4-6 months

Do you need to put straw or hay on top for grass seeds?

If the soil underneath it is tilled, probably not. I put topsoil on top of it and tamped it.

Since it's biodegradable, does that mean that it needs to be replaced? Thx

We put ours down on the side of the culvert outside our home when we built it it 2011 to help the soil become firm again and help plants and flowers take hold. By the time we sold the house in 2015, the culvert area looked like a veritable forest - gorgeous. so no, it won't need to be replaced anytime soon....

Jute is the prefered biodegradable erosion control. Jute can last up to 5 years, and is vastly superior to burlap which can last 2 years but begins to biodegrade within 6 months. Jute is the traditional use erosion control before all the woven plastic clothes came out.
