So does each ball (Kanto, Ash, Legacy) contain different characters to collect do the balls all have the same characters?

It's different, 151 Kanto Region Pokemons, 150 Classic Pokemons for Ash Adventure, 148 Pokemons from Kanto to Galar for the Legacy version.

mine came with batteries installed, Not sure how long they will last before needing to be changed

Hi. The game asks the kids Pokemon related questions and kids respond yes or no. The game tries to figure out which type of Pokemon a child may be thinking of. My kiddos love it. It's a guessing Pokemon game and the kids do get specific information regarding Pokemon.
