Product Description Donna Summer stars in this disco-musical from 1978. Following a dance contest at the local disco, THANK GOD IT'S FRIDAY features early performances by Debra Winger and Jeff Goldblum. Musical support comes from Summer (singing "Last Dance") and the Commodores. .com An unusual collision of the innocent and the decadent, Thank God It's Friday captures the disco era in all of its naive glory. Multiple storylines twine through an enormous nightclub: Two underage girls (one of them Terri Nunn, future lead singer of new wave rock group Berlin) desperately want in so they can enter a dance contest; the club's owner (Jeff Goldblum, Jurassic Park, The Fly) makes a bet with his dj that he can woo a beautiful married woman--whose uptight husband ends up taking drugs and loosening up more than he ever expected; a klutzy girl (Debra Winger, Terms of Endearment, in one of her first film roles) gets ditched by her best friend and flounders around the club looking for love; and an aspiring singer (Donna Summer, whose "Last Dance" won the Academy Award for Best Song) pleads with the dj to let her sing. Though not as richly written as American Graffiti or Dazed and Confused, Thank God It's Friday aspires to a similar meandering mix of melancholy and hope. It ends up being a pretty honest snapshot of the disco era: Sweet, shallow, and not as campy as you'd expect. For all the sex and drugs, in the end it's all about getting your groove on. As one character puts it, "Dancing--Everything else is bulls**t!" --Bret Fetzer

Great movie!
Obviously, I am dating myself with this review. This is one of my favorite movies, and it came out when I was very young. That being said, still, a hilarious movie with some of the greatest music ever made. Born to be alive by Patrick Hernandez, is a song I still have in my rotation and Donna Summerβs performance was hilarious and her music timeless. More than that, Chick Vennera is the absolute funniest character. β Iβm a dancer, and everything else is bull****!β.

Aged well and simply entertaining.
Admittedly this film is probably for fans of the genre, time, nostalgia and of course disco! Its fun, not too long, is paced EXCEPTIONALLY well. It has held up mostly because some films of the 70's with similar themes tended to have distracting over actors/acting of which this one did not.. I honestly gave it an additional star just for that.Donna Summer isn't an actress, but she doesn't hit it too hard , and her scenes are really mischievous and fun. Chick Vennerra steals the show. He's brilliant. Jeff Goldblum is also in it.(This is the early days of JG btw. Years before The Big Chill, years before Jurassic Park or The Marvel Universe. He hadn't cultivated the Goldblum Charisma just yet)There is a meta quality to the cinematography (close up of albums and 45's, scenes devoted entirely to fashion, etc) but its not pretentious at all. Really really silly simple and fun. I want the soundtrack!!!!!

I loved this movie as a young teenager growing up in ...
I loved this movie as a young teenager growing up in the midwest and when I moved to Los Angeles for college in 1980, I made it a point to go dancing at the famous disco called "Oskos" where the movie T.G.I.F. was filmed! Those were the best days, and it was fun to go back in time and see how innocent Los Angeles was...with less traffic, and cars that were actually made out of steel that didn't buckle, hence (the dance scene with Chick Vennera outside of the disco on top of the cars). It was also fun to see a few rising stars before they became mega stars - Jeff Glodblum and Debra Winger. Also seeing two stars from the film Car Wash, Mr. Ray Vitte, who played the DJ Bobby Speed and Mr. Otis Day who played Floyd. But the biggest draw of this film was seeing Ms. Donna Summer! I grew up on her music and loved her performances throughout her life. I actually had a chance to meet both her and her husband at the Hollywood bookstore "Book Soup" for her book signing where the line was around the block! Fortunately, some guys let me cheat in line and I moved from the end of the line to the very front of the line and got her autograph! I was so sad when she passed away, but glad to have had the chance to enjoy her music while she was alive. Finally I'd like to say that this film although a bit corny, is super fun to watch and defines the early 1980's for those who are curious to see why we dressed in polyester and teased our hair so big!! Thank you for allowing me to share!

Excellent Cinematic Artifact from the Disco Era
Why five stars for a Blu-Ray with zero extras? Because this delicious little pastry is a time capsule back to an era so distant, it feels like archaeology. It is a fun, not-too-deep romp through a night at the disco with all its rituals. It's also one of those Big Chill-like films that gave a lot of actors their starts (Jeff Goldblum, Debra Winger, Terri Nunn from Berlin). Plus, the radiant Donna Summer in a fun role which culminates in a performance of "Last Dance" that will make you smile and a little nostalgic. Add The Commodores, a great soundtrack, and the fact that it was filmed at and inside a real disco (Osko's Disco on La Cienega across from The Beverly Center, now torn down) and you end up with one of the best cinematic artifacts from the disco era, along with Saturday Night Fever.Keep in mind that it is a homogenized interpretation of the disco scene (for example: no cocaine in sight); but, that adds to its nostalgic value. Without the reality of overdoses and the AIDS epidemic to contend with, we can better wallow in the kitsch, the lights, the fashion, the "Farrah" hair, etc..and, as one charcter puts it, better turn off our minds and boogie. It would have been fantastic to get a "Making-Of" or a retrospective on the era; but, the nice visual and aural presentation of this Blu-Ray does this overlooked little gem justice.

Arguably the BEST of DISCO FILMS!
Thank God It's Friday gives Saturday Night Fever a run for its money, and I have to say I enjoyed this more!TGIF follows several characters around a nightclub called 'The Zoo' on a Friday evening with Donna Summer playing an unknown singer that wants a break. A thinner, younger, and still gorgeous Jeff Goldblum as a womanizing club owner that shits where he eats once too often. Cutie patootie Ray Vitte displays his natural charm and infectious sense of humor as the on-air disc jockey whose future in nightclub radio hangs by a thread if a star attraction doesn't perform as promised. For inquiring minds, that star attraction is none of other than THE COMMODORES!And that's just the tip of the iceberg! From underaged girls from Idaho attempting to sneak in, square couples tripping on psychedelics, to blind dates gone wrong, this Casablanca & Motown production is a cute and funny film immersed in good vibrations and fantastic music!

not toooo bad
You know when movies start being made about some craze or other the death knell aint far behind and so it is here.By the time this came out disco was just begining to get a deservedly bad press as SO much dross (not to say cr*p)was being rushed out, and hyped, to cash in,leaving the good stuff lanquishing in the back ground and, yes my friends, there was some GOOD music out there (i know i was there). For what it is this aint bad but really apart from "last dance" and "after dark" the music aint up to much.the fashions are fun tho'and the "Zoo "interior shows what a good disco could be like.likable
