There is no doubt that this rod is hard a frig. I tried an experiment to scrape off the flux and use it as a tig rod but this did not work, the deposited metal was as soft as mild steel. When used stick as it's intended it is as hard as a file. The only thing I noticed is that the hardest portion of all is the very surface of the bead. Deeper in the deposited metal it's softer. So if you intend to do something like resurface a brush hog blade then sharpen it to an edge it might work but wouldn't be as hard as just the solid bead on an excavator bucket or similar. In it's freshly deposited state the surface is too hard to work with any metal tooling. I didn't take a carbide burr to it because I'm afraid I'd ruin my burrs.

These rods worked very well to lay down a build up to rebuild the edge of my anvil. The edge was rounded by years of work and now it is like a new anvil. As you can see in the picture I now have a very nice edge on one side and I still have to rebuild the other side as down time allows.

Coverage is good but spits out too much causing skin burns so you have to use long sleeve gear which is miserable in the summer.
