Black Horses for the King (Magic Carpet Books)

Arrived quickly and in perfect condition!

A historical novel about how the English came about having the very large heavy horses for their knights. Along with a history of the shoeing of horses. The young Galwyn starts out as an interpreter for Arthur and his men looking for large stallions to breed a bigger horse to carry the knights. It is also a picture of what happened prior to the war with the Saxons. It is of course a fantasy, but so well written that you feel you are by Glawyn's side. A wonderful book for fans of Anne McCaffrey as well as horse lovers of all kinds.

This is part of my 12yo son's SonLight Curriculum reader list. The author makes her distaste for the popular tales of King Arthur and Camelot clear in her forward, no real danger of disappointment for those that take the time to research. While it starts with lots of action and appears to be a good read for boys, it quickly slows to an almost textbook like feel at times. The author thankfully keeps a little bit of angst and conflict limping along but not enough to keep my son reading at an enjoyable pace. Even my eyes were sleepy at times reading it. My daughter (then 12 also) thoroughly enjoyed it, but she adores horses and mammal related science - perfect match.

Like other books written by Anne it was an excellent read, she didn't need a lot of violence like so many writers use to hold a readers interest. I don't LIKE a great deal of unnecessary violence when telling a story. I've read all her Pern series, and many of her other books and she is as great a writer as MM Auel at creating a universe and peopling it in very great detail. Preteens, especially boys can read Black Horses for the King and enjoy it. Looking forward to the new book due out this coming spring.

I love this book. I’m a King Arthur freak and this was a different look at the legend. Also great book for horse lovers!!

I have read almost every book she has written. This is for a younger reader but I enjoyed it.

Being a big fan of McCaffrey, I hoped that I would enjoy this story and I did. Would like to know more about the time period, and Arthurian legends now. Liked the characters and the story development,

A book I’ve loved since I was a teen. Arrived in excellent, new condition.

Great. New, clean book, great read.

I have never been disappointed by Anne McCaffrey. They are always a good read when you have a day to spare and want to be entertained. I find this book mostly suited to the mid teen who enjoys history. This is a fictional work with good characters and an easy read plot.Would enjoy reading more about the characters like the Pern tales.

A great twist on the King Arthur legend in Anne's usual enjoyable stile.

Although quite short I really enjoyed this new twist to the Arthur Stories. It is actually very factual but taken from the view of a young lad who help with the horses.
