Excellent book for the intermediate leather worker
I found this book to be an excellent reference book. Definitely not for the beginner! If you are looking for a book to walk you through every step of the process of making a basic harness, and hold your hand while doing it, then purchase MAKING HARNESS by Lewis Martin.& Daniel PrestonIn this book the Author definitely expects you to know your way around a harness and have basic knowledge of leather working, and preferably harness making. However that said it does contain a lot of good tips for the more advanced leatherworker. It was interesting to see some of the different tools, such as pricking irons and lead rings, that are used in England that are not common in this country. The book begins with an excellent section on the history of harness and its uses. The section on harness styles and uses is week to say the least. I was hoping for more description of the different harness and details of that harness such as what makes a Gig Harness different from a Wagon harness. The section on making a complete harness, is incomplete! Again, the Author expects you to know how to make such mundane things such as traces, backstraps and tugs. Lots of tips on details, but very few patters or dimensions are offered. Excellent pictures of different parts of the harness but week descriptions of how to achieve said end product. As a more experienced, but long way from being a master, Harness maker I was hopping for even more advanced techniques and descriptions on how to do the "tricky stuff" such as true rounds, hidden stitching, or inlay/overlay work, none of which are covered.Overall a good book and I am glad that I purchased it as it is a good reference source. Just too bad it is not twice as thick!

You can do better.
This book is definitely NOT for the beginner. In fact, if you can understand where this guy is coming from then you don't need the book. One can learn more about harness from a Weaver catalogue.

Harness making
Dommage que les photos ne sont pas en couleur....Meilleure vision de certains détails. Sinon, intéressant ouvrage pour celui qui connait le sujet.
