From the Manufacturer This high-tech yet easy to use appliance module lets you control a plug-in device wirelessly from any Insteon-compatible controller. Use a wall keypad, handheld remote or even a computer or mobile phone. The ApplianceLinc simply plugs into an outlet and your lamp or appliance plugs into the bottom. Once installed link it to an Insteon-compatible controller using a simple Plug-n-Tap programming. With high-end quality and remote controllability, you'll see how easy it is to create your own smart home. Insteon is a low-cost home control technology that uses both the existing electrical wires in the home and radio-frequency to communicate. From lighting, appliance and thermostat control to integrated security systems, Insteon allows you to manage your home the way you want - from a handheld remote, wall keypad, computer or web-enabled device like a smart phone. Easy to install and set up, Insteon offers the flexibility and dependability to make life more convenient, safe and energy efficient. Note: The ApplianceLinc uses power line for its communication. When being controlled from an RF-only device such as a RemoteLinc, be sure to have at least one Access Point or dual-band device installed. These convert RF signals to power line and vice versa. This plug-in switch can control appliances up to 15 Amps and incandescent loads up to 480w; if you need to control a dimmable version, try the LampLinc Dimmer.

May not work correctly with LED lights!
Did not work correctly with my LED Christmas lights. The lights could not be totally turned off with this module. The problem is this module always sends a small current down the wire for its load sensing feature. That is what keeps the LED lights on dim when the unit is switched off. You can disable the load sensing feature, but you cannot disable the load sensing current. There is no direct fix, but I hear there are work-arounds. You can add a small additional load to the line to get the LED's to turn off. Adding a 4W nightlight or a wall transformer may correct this problem. Adding additional strings of LED lights may also take care of it.I decided to not mess with it and get a different module that does not have this problem. This module was discontinued by Smarthome on 12/4/13. The replacement module (#2635-222) and the current outdoor version (#2634-222) do not seem to have this problem. I talked with a Smarthome tech for a while about this. She was able to recreate this issue with this model (2456S3), but both 2635 and 2634 turned off completely during her tests. So I'm going to give 2634 a try.I would give this 1 star, but I'm sure it works fine for other applications. And I really like the Insteon products. So I'm giving it 2 stars.

Does the job
Really a huge, dated block of something. We use with the isy controller and it is perfectly functional for controlling some rope lights on a complex time schedule. My issue is symptomatic for any apartment dweller; you are pretty much stuck with using these things for most of your control needs if you don't have incandescent lighting, and they are very inflexible. The switched outlet is on the bottom, and you can't rotate the thing so the switched outlet would point up as the plug is grounded and polarized. It would be nice if smarthome made smaller modules that could switch just 0.5A or less for the little task lights we have scattered around the house.Even if you are willing to hard wire things in, you still have issues where you need GFCI. They really need someone like Leviton to adopt it as a standard and make a bunch of (well advertised) permutations.

It just works..
I got this to expand my Insteon install base. It works as you would expect and quite easy to use. This plugs into an existing socket and provides a pass-through and one remote controlled socket.I use one to control a small fan and another to control a floor light. The light is linked to an Insteon sensor so the light turns on when it senses a presence.I have the whole network of controls also setup so I can use it from my iphone and iPad.PS. You can control your lights using a web browser. The only thing Insteaon does not provide which I would love to have is a way to backup my entire configuration in case my master control is damaged which means if that happens, I have to start fresh (Ouch).

Not silent; fluorescent strip light flashes every ~10s when OFF
I wanted to control fluorescent strip lights with this product, but the result does not match my expectations.ON: No problems.OFF: Every ~10 seconds the single fluorescent strip light flashes very briefly. The unit clicks when switching on/off, which makes me suspect that there is a relay inside, doing the switching.I imagine that some power is leaking out of this product when OFF into the fluorescent electronics, which is charging up and causing something to trigger when it has charged up to a certain level, resulting in the flash, as that energy is dissipated. This surprises me if it does have a relay inside, since OFF should really be OFF with a relay (a relay is like a real on/off switch), but this might not be so if a power Triac or other electronics were being used to do the power switching.Has anyone taken this unit apart to see what is inside? Is there a relay? Any other components that could cause this (assumed) leakage? Please comment on this review if you know the answer!

Great Products
I love Insteon home automation products. If I could afford it, I would have every outlet and switch in my house wired up this way. I currently have 4 of these plug in modules, 4 switches and a 8 key switch hooked up to a home mac automation server running Indigo. I use two of the modules for lamps in the basement so I can switch between all lights on and just having the lamps on. I also have a number of different events set up to slowly bring the lamps in my bedroom up to 50% brightness over 30 minutes for when I wake up. Basically, I use it for a lot of different things. Note to anyone looking to purchase these, you will have to have some kind of server or controller set up for these to function. They are not a standalone product. They are simply add-ons for a home automation system. They are very reliable and I never have any quality or signal issues in my house.

Great if you get a good one
The DOA rate on these in 2013 is around 50%, regardless of whether I ordered them from Amazon or Smarthome. Smarthome's exchange process is more cumbersome, so I suggest you only purchase these from Amazon since they will cross ship a replacement immediately and give you a return label online 7x24. Smarthome wants you to call their customer service department during business hours, wait on hold for 20 minutes, then get a label and take it to the post office. The bad ones burn out immediately after linking. If you get a good one they work fine.

Best Insteon On/Off Device Out
I bought the applicancelinc to turn off various devices in my home automation setup. I have used it for non-dimming lights, Christmas lights, humidifiers and they have all worked perfectly.I use Homeseer as my HA software. Adding the ApplianceLinc was as simple as going to the admin portal and adding the 6 digit device id. A few seconds later i was in business. The AL has a passthough socket and adjustable led light.Highly recommended when you need to turn low load devices on or off.
