Unnecessary and pompous
Unless you are an organic Chemistry:If you are content knowing that Linalool is found mainly in plants from the families Lamiaceae (mints, scented herbs), Lauraceae (laurels, cinnamon, rosewood), Rutaceae (citrus fruits). However it can also be found in birch trees and other plants, from tropical to boreal climate zones as well as in some fungi. THEN YOU DO NOT NEED THIS BOOK.However if without any introduction to organic chemistry you want to know that Linalool has two stereoisomers: licareol is ==(R)==-(ā)-linalool and coriandrol is (S)-(+)-linalool and that belongs to the class of organic compounds known as acyclic monoterpenoids with a chemical formula of C10H18O with two alternative parents: tretiary alcohols and /or hydrocarbon derivatives, THEN THIS IS A BOOK FOR YOU.For the purposes of the average aromatherapist I suggest to look elsewhere for safety guidelines. Most of the safety advice in this book reads like:"Our dermal maximum is based on 75.7% cinnamaldehyde content with a dermal limit of 0.5%. We agree with E Monographs daily oral maximum of 200 mg for the oil"...What are they talking about? Cinnamon bark oil: Newsflash: to stick the proposed maximums here, you would have to make sure that you do not exceed the limits by either blending with other oils or by actually consuming or coming into contact with anything else which contains cimmaldehyde and the list of things to look for looks like this:trans-CinnamaldehydeCinnamic aldehyde(E)-Cinnamaldehyde3-PhenylacrylaldehydeCinnamal(2E)-3-phenylprop-2-enal3-PhenylpropenalZimtaldehydetrans-Cinnamic aldehydeCinnamylaldehyde(E)-3-PhenylpropenalPhenylacrolein(E)-3-Phenyl-2-propenalCassia aldehyde3-PhenylacroleinCinnemaldehyde(E)-3-phenylprop-2-enalCinnamyl aldehyde2-propenal, 3-phenyl-, (2E)-Cinnamaldehyde, (E)-trans-CinnamylaldehydeBenzylideneacetaldehyde3-Phenyl-2-propenalbeta-Phenylcrolein3-Phenyl-2-propenaldehydeAcrolein, 3-phenyl-.....and the list keeps on going .....

Excellent book on learning how to use essential oils safely. Highly recommend.
I ordered this book as a supplement guide for my aromatherapy course. It's very informative and extremely useful in learning essential oils safety. It discusses the chemical components of each oil, benefits and uses. The pictures in the book are not in color. This is a big textbook and heavy to carry around. I have the Kindle version on my phone for quick and easy reference wherever I go. The hardcover textbook is good to use at home as a desk reference. It's always good to know how to safely use essential oils effectively, and this book teaches the best way to do so. Delivery took about a week and it was packaged well. The book is expensive, but textbooks usually are. It's definitely worth the price.

before you buy this book
So let me start by saying, iām a registered nurse and iām just now getting into & researching essential oils; got this book and immediately started processing my return š. it is VERY much so a scientific TEXTBOOK and could be overwhelming to most people.I ended up keeping the book because i figured out HOW to use it. Each essential oil has a section that tells about multiple case studies and cautions. THIS is valuable because it allows me to make an informed decision on how much of the oil is safe to use and not to use; because some oils for kids are considered unsafe (eucalyptus as an example) and by me seeing in the studies that the ppl or kids that had a negative reaction LIKELY orally consumed a large amount of it or was exposed to too high of a concentration. So for this purpose it is helpful!

Don't use another essential oil without out this book!
I've had this book now for several months and I seriously pick it up at least once or twice a day. Yes, I am a professional aromatherapist and a registered nurse, but neither of these are necessary or required to find this huge book of information helpful and necessary. You absolutely DO NOT have to be even well versed in essential oils to NEED this book. If you use any essential oil for any reason - you need this book. If you don't understand some of the chemical constituent information, then take time to learn it - it isn't difficult and the author makes it really very easy. Is it an absolute necessity for anyone who sells, uses or advocates the use of essential oils - YES!! It is easily segmented into even just a particular essential oil and you can quickly see if there are cautions for pregnancy or any other health issue. It astounds me that so much research, documentation and time had to go into accumulating all of this information and the price of the book is very under priced in my opinion when I consider so many of the healthcare texts and college texts that give a smidgen of the information in this one book. Yes, it is big and yes it is heavy and yes it is worth every single cent you might spend on it.Robert Tisserand is THE single most respected authority for so many things pertaining to aromatherapy and essential oils but particularly when it is a question of safety. He has been studying, researching and writing about this subject for very many years. This book sits beside my desk - and I have many aromatherapy books that aren't in this revered spot - so I can easily reach over and check, double check everything whether I am making up a blend, writing a blog, commenting on a social media site or just curious - the answers are always (yes, always) there and easily found. He has given the world of aromatherapy what no one else could - legitimacy and safety. I for one will be forever grateful.

An Essential Oil Bible for Health Professionals and Others in the Wellness Industry
I spent a few weeks deciding whether or not to buy this book. But I can honestly say it has been so valuable and so worth it.I am constantly dipping into it for information relating to the science and safety of Oils.As a health professional I need information I can rely on that is backed up by data and good, hard science - this book has all that and is well-referenced. I often use it to research talks and presentations I give on Essential Oils and it saves so much time because more often than not the info I am after is in here. I wouldn't want to be without this book now I have it, and I'm sure other serious Essential Oil users will feel the same.If ever they update this book, I will be at the front of the queue to buy the next edition.

outstanding
Tisserand's original Essential Oil Safety textbook was a first in the field, and this enormously expanded second edition is hugely impressive. In a realm where so much that is written about essential oils and aromatherapy is, frankly, a load of New Age guff, this book brings some desperately needed hard facts to the reader. It's exhaustively referenced, collecting vast amounts of research, but maintains a splendidly critical and lucid narrative discussing the information. Absolutely invaluable for any serious user of essential oils.

An essential book for lovers of essential oils.
This is such a good book and exactly what I was looking for years ago when I first got into essential oils. Factual, well referenced. Nice layout. All the hard work has been done here; an absolute wealth of information. And I must say I love Amazon for the choice it gives. I would never have found 99% of the books I have bought off of them.
