Q: I'm looking for a thermometer that I could insert into 5 x 5 round bales of hay to monitor internal temp. Is your product capable?

There is a review by Texas 777 in Reotemp’s analogous product A24PF-F43 which only has Fahrenheit indications on the dial (appears to otherwise be same product as this one, and is same price), describing the efficacy of just this scenario. This person was using it for 48x64” tightly wound round hay bales and found the thermometer to be “Sturdy enough to push in without bending and gives an accurate temperature WAY faster and more accurately than the high priced hay bale testers I have been using. (Make sure you get the orange guard that protects the dial to push the probe in!). After taking readings of up to 120F I could stick the tip into soft earth to bring the reading back down for the next bale and it would drop 40 degrees back below 80F in 15 seconds or so. Wish I'd found these years ago!” Hope this helps!

Q: Can this be calibrated regularly?

Yes, our longer stem compost thermometers can be calibrated.CALIBRATION INSTRUCTIONS:Reference Bath: You will need a bath of water of a known temperature, typically an ice bath. The ice bath should be mostly ice, with just enough water to fill the spaces. The reference bath should be at least 4 inches deep (6 or more inches is better.) The bath should be agitated (stirred) just before or during calibration.Immersion: The thermometer should be immersed at least 4 inches into the bath, as the sensitive portionof the thermometer is in the last 2-3 inches of the stem.Calibration: Leave the thermometer in the bath for at least a minute, to make sure temperatures havestabilized. Then turn the small (1/4") hex screw head on the back of the dial case of the Thermometer untilthe pointer is at 32°F (0°C). You can use a flat screwdriver, or a small coin, or pliers to rotate the screwhead.Congratulations, your thermometer has been re-calibrated!If your thermometer will not recalibrate, it may need factory repair. (If the stem is bent, it cannot berepaired, and must be replaced).

Q: Does this thermometer come with a sheath so I can leave it at my composter?

Yes, I believe it can be left at the composter. The one I purchased had a sheath. I took it to Zimbabwe to a Mission where I am encouraging organic gardening.

Q: What is the recommended method to clean the thermometer? Just wipe it down with a dry cloth or should I wipe it down with something like h-peroxide?

Dip it in clean water and wipe down with a dry cloth, for use in monitoring compost temperature.
