Q: Does it work with a Mac?

Yes. USB compliant works great on a Mac with no drivers needed. Just plug and play. And it sounds so much better than the headphone out jack :)

The system volumn should be variable and not fixed. The volumn normally will respond to both the keyboard and desktop/screen controls.

Yes..should connect quick n easy...although the usb port is a little flimsy and wish all the ports were on the same side it works fine on my alienware pc to my monitors.

Q: Does this device boost the signal (amplify) or is it straight line level output?

No, it does not boost the signal. It is line level output from USB input. Works great, convenient and small. There is a green light that lets you know its on, and two XLR outlets if you want to run stereo.
