Does it work for a Mercury 40hp 4 stroke ?

Perfectly. I also have a 40 HP 4 stroke.

What all does this connect? Just the tach?

This was the perfect harness for my 2014 Mercury 30 Hp EFI. I was able to hook up the tach, pull off a 12v hot wire and a neutral wire so my gauge lights would work. There are 3 or 4 wires available for other things of your choice. Great harness.

What is the overall length of the the harness?

2 to 3 ft some where in between

What tachs are compatible with this harnesses?

All analog merc/ quicksilver tachs , I’m sure other aftermarket analog tack will work as well but I can’t vouch for any . I use Mercury tack in my boat and work perfect.
