Q: Do you know how well these work with a Shimano Deore 9sp long cage derailleur?

It will not be a problem. This shifter is compatible with Shimano all 9s derailleur.

Q: Can the rear shifter work in friction mode, or index only?

The m96 is index only and only works with shimano style, 2:1 pull ratio rear derailleurs. But it is a nice little jobbie for the price.

Q: What's the maximum clamp diameter?

I am not sure of the maximum clamp diameter, but it fits a standard MTB bar fine. So if you are going to use it somewhere other than a handle bar, I would make sure it is close to the same diameter. I do not now how much you can spread the clamp. I also should have stayed with Shimano trigger shifters. The Sunrace just is not as precise with my LX derailleur.
