Cheaper than local, and very versatile!
I love Bob's Red Mill -- their stuff is always very good quality, and this is no exception. This was cheaper than I could find locally.I use this in cooking, especially as a protein extender in curries in the instant pot. It cooks up faster than beans, and I'll often throw it in with a veggie curry or tofu curry or something that I can cook on a fast setting with fast release.I also make my own soymilk, and it's a great complement to a variety of dishes like okara fritters to give the mealy okara from the soymilk maker a little texture and crunch, or to give a bit of loft (since the tvp will absorb broth, for example) in fillings for stuffed veggies and so on.But I also use TVP granules dry in a little dish, sprinkled lightly with BBQ flavored salt from the dollar store, as a snack. It's sort of like the crunchy bits on the bottom of the pork rinds bag, but vegan, lol, and it keeps me drinking on some days when I just need a salty nibble to keep myself drinking water.

Very good product
I highly recommend this tvp. It's easy to use and it's a great meat substitute.

Great Protein Option for Vegetarians
I used this to imitate ground beef so I could make a bolognese-type pasta sauce (a girl's got cravings). The texture is a little bit crunchy so I suggest soaking it in a bit of water but overall it's a great replacement for ground meat.

Works well for meatless chili
I just made a batch of vegetarian chili with this TVP and I am very happy with the results. I first lightly sauteed my chili powder and spices in about a tablespoon of oil for about a minute. I then added a cup of water and a scant cup of TVP. The TVP quickly absorbed the water and spices and turned a dark brown color. It looked very much like cooked ground beef at this point. I then added a can of crushed tomatoes and a small can of tomato/jalapeno sauce. I simmered this all together for about 40 minutes adding small amounts of water along the way. I did not want to add a lot of other stuff to the chili because I wanted to see how the TVP did more or less on its own. It took on the chili seasonings very well an was quite tasty. It did not have the flavor of beef and none of the greasiness of animal fat. It was perhaps a bit less filling than meat chili but so far it seam easier on my digestion. I am not a vegetarian, by the way. I am testing this out for backpacking/camping meals. I enjoyed the TVP chili and I would happily make and eat it again. As I said, it might visually fool someone into thinking it was beef, but it tasted like the chili seasoning, not like beef. If I really wanted beef flavor I would use beef stock or perhaps beef bouillon but IMO that is not necessary, at least for chili. My next experiment will be to use as the protein in a chicken stew/soup. I will use chicken stock to reconstitute the TVP, in that case, because it will not be nearly as highly seasoned as chili.

A household stapke
A staple for vegetarians and vegans. Inexpensive meat/protein substitute. Easy to use, takes place if ground beef etc. Recommend.

There IS a difference on the type of TVP you buy.
I have always like bob's TVP, as an avid taco eater it is beyond easy to sub it for ground beef with the usual seasonings and a bit of coconut oil. Bam, ready to eat "taco meat" in 5 minutes or so (it says to soak for 10 min, but I notice no difference honestly.)Of course being economically minded, I have tried other, cheaper brands. Different size pieces, different colors, I've tried a lot. I threw away a majority of them, being much more difficult to work with, and having an indescribable yet pervasive "flavor" that ruined any broth or seasoning I applied. So here I am, back here with Bob's. They texture if by far the best for a ground beef dupe, and the flavor is quite light and neutral to me, making it easy to apply to many dishes.
