Neurodiversity! What's That?: An introduction to neurodiversity for kids

Perfect. Wish I had found it sooner.
This is an excellent book to help neurodiverse youngsters understand themselves and deal with what can be a rather difficult world as they are growing up. Once they understand the message(s) in this book it should help to boost their self-esteem and self-awareness.I love the fact that it has enough text to get the important points over, well broken up by illustrations and a bit of humour. Although it mentions famous neurodiverse people who have achieved "great things", this is not laboured - in other words, it is not likely to leave a neurodiverse child wondering why they don't have a superpower!I think it would be an excellent resource for stimulating discussions between children and their parents - or even their siblings and friends. Difficult to suggest a suitable age range, as everyone is different but I think reading age 7-11, perhaps?

Couldn't make a better book!!!
Brilliant tone, friendly voice, celebrated what's special and positive about each person, easy language!I've used this with my child to share what's special about each person in my child's class, and I've used this at work (in a school) to celebrate uniqueness and diversity.Absolutely my favourite book on this topic.N.B. also had a copy where the publisher had accidentally inserted another book in the centre, which made for a strange but fun read too!

This book is brilliant! Both my children found it really helpful! As a professional working with autistic clients, professionals and parents i will be highly recommending this fantastic resource! It’s an easy read, with clear illustrations. Most importantly it’s written by a neurodivergent author with lived experience 💚

Excellent! At last, a nook about neurodiversity for kids!!
I don't often write reviews but I felt I had to with this. My nephew is autistic and my daughter sometimes finds it hard to understand why he does/says what he does. This book offers that explanation. It is so good to see a book that talks positively about neurodiversity, not something that needs to be fixed but something that is different and why that doesn't equal bad.Really refreshing, easy to read and follow. I can't recommend it enough!

Meh
Kind of disappointed in this. I'm an autistic teaching assistant looking for something that i can use to present Neurodiversity to the children in a primary classroom. This wasn't it.It's very wordy, and kind of defines things without really explaining how that affects people and what others can do to be more inclusive. The worst part is the page where it describes a few succesful people without naming them, stating their neurodivergence. (Presumably because they didn't have legal permission to name them. Which makes me question if it's okay to include them by such obvious hints.)Neurodiversity is not just about celebrating those who have worldly success. It's about embracing people of all neurotypes, including those with learning disabilities, including those who can't survive this world without full time support. I can see that the intentions of this book are fantastic, but it's not quite what I needed to explain my own neurodivergence and why some of their classmates don't speak or behave differently.

Exactly what my child needed!
I have been looking for a book like this for a while. My daughter gets upset when she hears people say she has disorder and so do I. She is perfect as she is. This book is fun and easy to understand, it left her feeling better about herself. It also helped me understand a bit more too!

Love this book!
This book almost looks home printed or def small scale printed, but I LOVE IT. It should be everywhere to teach some compassion. I’m an adult and just now learning or hearing this term “neurodiversity” and I think it’s an EXCELLENT way to describe differences in peoples brains rather than labeling them with “disorders” or words that have come to have negative connotations or assumptions along with them over time. It is simple and breaks things down into little parts to explain differences in brains 🧠 and that those differences are OK🙌🏻. I recommend if you’re trying to learn and also teach your child about their autism, adhd, dyslexia etc. we used for my 6yo to understand why she may have more struggles than some other kids BC she has been asking why her friends don’t seem to be bothered by the things that cause her meltdowns. There’s talking points and questions within the book that allowed us to discuss and keep engaged (she’s not a big book person). By the end she was actually happy and excited to learn that her brain being different is likely why she’s really good at certain things like music and art etc*this is about neurodiversity as a whole and does not go into deep detail about autism or other disorders or explain the spectrum in detail. HOWEVER it does provide a glossary at the very end with definitions of various words and conditions so you can continue to explain to your child what they may have and/or their friends conditions as well if desired. 😊

Short and sweet introduction to neurodiversity for kids of the modern times
I'm neurodivergent and I wish everyone read the book. It's very short and straight to the point.I particularly liked how adapted is to kid's modern realities, like talking about YouTubers or pokémon.Great read!

A clear and easy to read book that can help Children and Adults learn about Neurodiversity!!!
This book is easy to read, and helps teens, children and adults understand Neurodiversity! Meghan, our 18 year old autistic daughter just read your book and she says "I liked it. It was easy to read. I like how the descriptions were easy to understand but didn't over simply the definitions in a problematic way. The author didn't leave out important details or promote stereotypes. The author made it clear how varied people's life experiences are and how it can be different per individual. IT was nice that there was so much variety in her explanations so that the reader can better understand Neurodiveristy and how it's not a one size fits all scenario."I loved how this book made Meghan so happy. I'll be buying a few more copies as coincidentally tonight my husband just came up from work and wanted to figure out how to explain to a coworker about Neurodiveristy so that he can help a member of their team who is on the spectrum. This book should prove to be very helpful.Thank you for writing it!!! BRAVO!!!!
