Hi Bonnie, Yes! The arm can be removed for cleaning purposes.

Q: How much oil is needed?

1 a Tablespoon of oil u desire for every 1 cup of popcorn. I love avocado or EVO to use then put 1 tablespoon unsalted butter on top of container n it will melt.

Q: I can't get the stir bar back on after i cleaned it. the knob won't come off. what am i doing wrong?

I had to unscrew the knob and then clean it. Then I replaced the stir rod under the knob and screw it on. Not easy so be patient-only complaint I have about this product.
