Q: How fuel efficient is this stove? Some of the Chinese stoves really burn through a 4 oz. canister quickly.

In my testing it is a little less fuel efficient than the Pocket Rocket and Micro Rocket (and those are only average) but it's still satisfactory. Some other stoves are definitely more efficient. It will depend a little on how you use the stove of course (blocking wind, not opening the valve full blast, etc). This is a great little stove.

Q: Which position does the switch need to be in when screwing onto a canister? Middle? What is the down position for?

There is no switch. The metal tab that flips out of the valve is the valve handle. It flips out so that it can store compact. When screwing the canister on. Flip out the valve handle and then turn the handle clock wise until it stops. This is the valves closed position. Once the canister is on you can turn the handle counter clockwise or to the left to light. Be careful as this stove can put off a very large flame. You can adjust the flame by opening or closing the valve slightly. When done cooking turn the valve to the right until it stops let it cool and then pack up for your next awesome meal.
