A kokoshnik is a traditional Russian head-wear that is worn with a sarafan. The name kokoshnik comes from the ancient Russian word kokosh, meaning hen. Kokoshniks have been used by Russian married women for 1,000 years, as their early versions have been found in burials of the city-state of Novgorod the Great, dating to at least 10th century CE.
