How Yagi antennas affected my reception
I recently got two Yagi antennas to work with my US Cellular provided modem, model DWR-961, replacing the stock antennas that are mounted directly on the modem. If you are interested in such a setup, here are my details:Under stock conditions the modem got a fair signal (40%) outside my house but only 13% inside the house by a window. (The modem reports these signal strength values). I was able to get an internet connection inside the house with download speeds around 6 Mbps. Worried that this weak signal reception would not be adequate, I ordered the Yagi antenna kit for the modem (antenna, lightning protector, cables and adapter: https://shop.rfwel.com/d-link-dwr-961-high-speed-internet-router-yagi-antenna-kit-50-ft-cable/ This is the same package as offered here on Amazon). The low-loss cables (LMR-400) appear to be of good quality, as did all of the components. I only needed to order a mount pole to complete the setup (For the pole I used https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01MZ21OFD?ref=ppx_pt2_dt_b_prod_image).After mounting the external antenna I found my signal jumped to 46% when using the left antenna receiver on the modem and 0% when using the right. I then left the small internal antenna in the mount not being used by the external antenna. Ping was 43 and speeds averaged 20 Mbps down and 10 Mbps up.I added a second Yagi antenna on the same mounting pole, polarized 90 degrees to the first. Now the modem reports 70% signal strength, although the download/upload speeds did not appreciably increase. It turns out that the best signal strength came with the horizontally mounted antenna in the left hole and the vertical in the right – switching them dropped me back to 46%.Conclusions – external Yagi antennas worked way better than the stock antennas on the inside. Just one provided more signal strength and download/upload speeds. Adding the second Yagi antenna improved the signal reception but not so much the speeds. The modem was sensitive to which antenna (horizontal vs vertical polarization) was mounted in each hole. Orienting the antennas so that they point directly to the signal tower was also crucial.
