Awesome Value and Working Metal Detector For Amateur +
Getting another detector as have moved to a different place. Out in the country and many interesting places to hunt. Great reviews on this Minelabs Vanquish 540. Liked that it had a larger 12x9 double D coil. Most units in this price range come with 8" oval. The bigger the coil the better. Assembly was highly intuitive and was together in 5 minutes. Came with rechargeable batts & charger. Wanted to use faster so popped in 4 AA alkalines. Has start-up settings that are good and easily adjustable on the fly. Tested in yard and the 540 quickly and accurately found a gold ring, penny, dime, quarter and silver half dollar that I buried at 6 inches. Item Match correctly identified each item with a corresponding Target Number. Will be easy to spot gold, silver and coins for sure. Tech has advanced in recent years and this ML V 540 works better, is easier to use and lighter than the Garrett AT Gold I had a several years ago and at $200+ less cost. I'm very happy with it and can't wait to hit the field. Quick Start Guide only. Full manual is readily findable on the web.

Great for beginners!
I'm a newbie to the hobby, and I am really glad that I picked this metal detector for my first. We live in the Pacific Northwest, and so mineralization is a thing here - this detector does the ground balancing for you - one less techno-geek thing I need to understand before I get started. I've only been able to get a few hunts under my belt, but so far, so FUN! I absolutely love that you can push a button to "tune out" iron and other ferrous metals, as there seems to be a lot of that where I've been hunting. It's very lightweight, which I needed because I don't have a lot of strength and/or conditioning in my arms. Even this one gets heavy after a while, but I just switch hands and I'm good to go. I love that it's adjustable, since I'm only 5'2". The red is snazzy, too - not that the color matters in terms of performance but....snazzy.I was a little bummed that it only came with a quick start guide, but I was able to find the full owner's manual online, and read it on my phone on PDF. I would have preferred something printed in a book for me to take with me that I could pull out and refer to, as I'm not really wanting to try to look at my phone and read a PDF in the field.

Was supposed to be new!!!
This machine must have been a display unit that was reboxed. The box was only taped together at the waist as the usual closure part on the end was ripped. Parts were already installed, second coil mounting screw and rubbers missing. Box looked like the delivery driver used it for a booster seat. Corners were ripped open. Settings on the detector were not factory settings. Surprisingly to it's credit the unit appears to function.

Great out of the box and customizable for the more adventurous souls.
I just bought a farm with some historical relevance and wanted a metal detector to see what fun stuff I could find. I have zero prior experience, and was able to pop the batteries in and head out, having read nothing but the basic quick-start guide included (5 minutes tops). As I've progressed in my knowledge (and eleventy bazillion dug-up nails later) I've started branching out into the more customizable aspects so I'm now able to save my time (and back) digging up more fun stuff and fewer nails. I highly recommend this for newbies and the more sophisticated hunters alike. Everything has been exactly as described in the listing.

DEAD ON ARRIVAL
Unit wont power on. We’ve tried everything, multiple sets of new batteries, disassemble and reassembling multiple times. It’s a defective unit.

New toy
I have only tried it couple of times. This unit will be all I ever need. Found something in the yard giving a clear signal. Dug down about 6 inches and found a spent 22 lr case. That's not much metal folks to detect at 6 inches. I was impressed.
