Expansive!
Best purchase of my pandemic. Lots of great hikes are listed, and the difficulty/length information keeps me from getting too much or too little of what I'm after. The maps work for finding something around wherever I am in California.

Informative hiking guide
Got this book for my grandson who moved to California. He is a hiking enthusiast and he said the book is a good reference for new places to hike

A Must for all Outdoor Lovers
I love this book and can't put it down! It has great information about the trail and how to get there. I take it on all my camping trips and have even planned some trips based on the hikes in the book.

good trail descriptions and quick summary info
If you want one book that covers all of CA, this is it....good trail descriptions and quick summary info. Descriptions often lack key stat of elevation start, elevation peak and overall elevation gain.

Best California hiking book ... but question the updates
I own the 2008 8th edition (two editions ago) which has been my beloved dog-eared annotated bible of California hiking for many, many years. There were two glaring errors on a recent hike in the Redwoods which prompted me to purchase the latest 2016 10th edition in the hopes that there were some significant updates in the intervening 8 years. The first thing I noticed when the book arrived was that it was actually SMALLER. 40 pages smaller, to be exact. That's weird. The 9th edition was shorter than the 8th, and the 10th is even shorter. I'd have thought they'd be ADDING hikes, not subtracting them. I LIKE having a big fat hiking book. The 10th edition - not so big and fat.The even bigger disappointment was that the write-ups for the two hikes with erroneous information were completely unchanged word for word. So, what's the point of an updated edition?I ended up returning it.The book in and of itself is a 5, at least the 8th edition was. If you have an older edition, don't bother "updating" it, and if this is the first time you're buying it, be wary that some of the information may be quite out of date. It makes me wonder what they've actually changed between editions, other than (sadly) trimming it down.
