Montalbanos are great books, and one can read them in many ways.As detective mysteries the plots are interesting and the stories are pageturners.As books about life, the wonderfully irritating main character and the sides take the centre of the stage. Montalbano himself is irrational, fierce, absurd and ridiculously funny.Interestingly, the books are not very linear in the way that you can pick one written a decade ago without losing the underlaying thread of the Vigata world. The relationships and the side characters float around, and whereas Montalbano ages (and makes a point on it!), the others just carry on being themselves year after year.Anyone with first hand experience of Italian living will find extra perks with the subtle references (well explained in the back of the book to us less Italianated) and relate better with the obsession to Food in the books.Adeli, what is the situation with sardines?

These stories by Andrea Camilleri about Inspector Montalbano are both interesting and amusing. The tv programmes follow the stories in great detail but the stories explain more about the relationship s between the characters. They are also a great price!

Having read and enjoyed the first 10 books. Just started on 2nd 10. They are just as good. You feel like you are in the story with him. Very well written.

A must read

This is a great collection- even better than the first set. Well written and now more humour. Also a great price for a superior writer of his craft.

Loved the movie series . Enjoying know montebanado from the writers perspective. Quite a different man often thinks very literally and out loud!
