Wimberley AP-620 Lens Foot for Sony 200-600 G OSS - Permanent Style - Arca-Swiss Style

The AP-620 is worth the money
I like the product as it is well made with no sharp edges plus it fits the Sony lens foot attachment to a tee!

Solid, trustworthy, comfortable Arca-Swiss Lens Foot
This is precisely-machined, excellent quality aluminum lens foot. It fits well, screws solidly into the lens; plus has an additional lock screw to further prevent the main attachment from loosening--I don't believe it is going to loosen on it's own. Two optional safety screws are provided for additional security while the Lens is adjusted within the Arca Swiss clamp. This is a solid, 'semi-permanent' lens foot; i.e. it must be attached/removed with hex wrenches. That's my preference, as opposed to the original lens foot and the alternative Kirk and RRS lens feet which all are field-removable via a knob. I don't casually remove a lens foot, I don't need one which I can accidentally loosen in the field, and I'm not worried about suddenly needing a hex wrench when shooting. Choose a lens foot based on your habits and needs.I'm happy with the Wimberley lens foot, but feel it would be improved if some unnecessary aluminum had been machined away to save an ounce or two. The Kirk and the RRS versions for the Sony 200-600 are each milled out nicely. Often this milling includes a slot through which a web strap can be attached to the lens (not really necessary since this Sony lens has such a slot on the lens body). The last lens foot I bought, a Kirk, is beautifully milled out, yet is as sturdy as if it were solid. The Wimberley is less expensive than the other two, but I would have paid more for one which had a bit of unnecessary aluminum removed. The Wimberley is an excellent value and any of the three would be an excellent choice.

Best option, rock solid, missing ONE detail...
I prefer this version to the RRS and kirk versions because I want to leave it on the camera (their versions are designed to be removed as needed, this you mount once and leave on the lens). It mounts with a nice fat threaded screw (allen key included) and has a set screw with a rubber tip (allen also included). They've also included "keeper" tiny grub screws for the ends of the plate so it can't slide out of a partially open clamp (and the needed allen!). The ONE detail they forgot? Both the OEM sony version and both kirk and RRS versions have a bar at the camera end of the foot for a strap attachment. Yes the lens has 2 as well but if you use those the strap wears on the body much more than if it's attched to the foot. It's not a deal breaker but the pictures don't show that part of the foot so you can't know ahead of time. I use my strap on peak design's fancy little connectors and I use one under the camera body and one on the left hand lens lug. It works OK but I preferred it on the end of the foot with the sony version. That said I much prefer the stronger more streamlined version of the foot with the acra dove tails machined in. The sony foot with a plate just wasn't a nice looking option. Very glad to have this, just wish it had an option for a strap mount. The longer length is very comfortable for hand holding.

Mostly nice design with sloppy mount tolerances
Overall design is good. Reasonably comfortable to carry and handle. Thin but sturdy. Mostly well machined and coatings seem decent quality. Fits well into Arca-Swiss mount. Could be machined to be lighter than it is as some areas seem to have excess metal. Surprisingly heavy given how thin it is.Main complaint is the mount. It was not machined to closely match the dimensions of the lens attachment point and there is considerable slop in dimensions between the lens connection and this foot. Even with the bolt attached securely and the set screw tightened it can still rotate slightly with minimal force. The set screw seems like an afterthought and doesn't work well, plus it has exposed threading visible when the unit is off the lens. There is no obvious way to adequately secure a lens to this foot such that it doesn't have some amount of play between the foot and the lens. This could have been solved by machining the mount to be tighter to the lens and then the set screw would be unnecessary. They also should have slotted the mount so that the lens is retained even if the bolt were to loosen slightly. An additional lesser annoyance is the use of three different sized mounting screws requiring three sized wrenches using two different standards. (two in US customary, one metric). Loosening the foot from the lens requires at least two different hex wrenches. Needing three different wrenches strikes me as lazy engineering and makes life needlessly harder for the product user. It should be possible to engineer this product to use one wrench for all screws. It would also be nice if the part had a tapped 1/4-20 hole coming from the rear parallel to the lens for mounting a strap such that the lens hangs down. This would also allow it to be mounted to a tripod with a strap still attached for quick setup.
