It's a hydrometer: simple and easy to read, if you know what you are doing. They do provide good instructions for novices, so anyone can do it. The microfiber cleaning cloth is a nice bonus, but unnecessary. The only quibble I have is with the test-jar: it's way oversized. The provided test-jar (AKA graduated cylinder) is 250 mL and you need most of that volume to suspend the hydrometer. I suppose if you are brewing large/standard batches (eg. 5 gal), loosing 400-500 mL (before and after samples) is not too big a deal, but when you are small batch brewer of a gallon at a time, loosing a beer's worth of fluid is a big hit on your brew. A narrower test jar of the same height would cut this loss in half (at least), while still yielding accurate results.

Fine product. The glass test jar is of good quality with an ample base for stability, and the hydrometer is well made. The combination comes at a very fair price. I have not yet used this on my cider batches, but testing it in water it appears quite accurate. I thought I would like the color coding, but I find that actually makes it a little harder to read - nothing that good lighting won't fix. I have another hydrometer with a plain white scale which is easier to read in dim lighting. My old one is a bit off when I check it with water. I have assumed that the OG-FG values would still be about right, but it is good to have one that is accurate now. I must commend Goodmanns for their customer support. They have followed up with several emails to make certain that I received the product and to provide informational links on how to use it. Highly recommended.

Seems pretty accurate when used in just water. Very clear to read with the colored bands. The cylinder is quite large so it takes about a cup to two cups of fluid and it is not clear plastic. Otherwise I like the setup. Used in several batches and all seem to come out with accurate readings.

I like that it is glass, not plastic like the one I had. I can put this in dishwashers whereas the plastic one got warped that way. The markings are easy to read and I like the projection of approximate alcohol content which saves me working it out. I really don't care much whether beer is 5.5% or 6.0%. This is a relatively delicate instrument so I am glad to have a good storage box for it now too.

The cylinder arrived in tact but the hydrometer itself was shattered inside upon opening the box. Husband did not realize and he threw away all packaging so no way to return. In the pictures provided you can see the broken glass and the inner black substance of the hydrometer still in the never opened hydrometer case. I am not really a satisfied or happy customer.UPDATE -The vendor of this item promptly sent out a replacement without complaint to make it right. I would recommend purchasing from this vendor always!

so far, the unit is as expected. it works fine, as a simple hydrometer should. however, the only thing i would change, would be the diameter of the test jar. my old one is of a larger diameter and balanced better. but, this is 2018. things are more expensive to do the same job at best...

Hydrometer works great. My only complaint is that you can't really see through the test jar to make a measurement, so you have to put in enough liquid so you can see your measurement from the top. Not the end of the world.

Just got this in, and I don't know if there was a crack I didn't see in the bottom or what. When I set it in my sink the bottom just busted out. I work in a lab I am pretty good with glass instruments, and I definitely didn't mishandle the item. I tried emailing them and it said that email wasn't valid? So I am trying to get in contact with them.
