Lyman .45 Caliber Expanding Die
This is a fantastic expanding die that I primarily use for .45 ACP. I haven't had this for too long, but I'm now starting to prefer using this one over my Lee expander die. I was originally getting a fair amount of brass shavings when running my sized brass through my Lee expander; I'm not sure if this was either because I don't bother to chamfer/ream my case mouths prior or if it was caused by the spiral machining marks on the tapered portion of the expander in my Lee die. My new Lyman M expanding die doesn't give me as many brass shavings compared to my Lee expander die.The Lyman die seems easier and smoother to operate in my press than with my Lee die because I did notice the Lyman die consists of a nicely polished steel expander that performs a 2-step expansion. I've also noticed that the flare on the case mouths are more consistently formed and the plated bullets I use appear to be more vertically aligned with the cases using the Lyman die.I did research up on comparisons between this Lyman and other brands of expanding dies for this caliber. Before I finalized my decision on getting this particular die, I was also considering the Redding expander die. There is actually a good YouTube video that compares these two expander dies in detail and it sold me on the Lyman. The only real con I can think of is the expander stem assembly consisting of two pieces. The bottom threaded expander portion can possibly come loose with use, so using a thread-locker might be useful in preventing it from unscrewing. Otherwise, this Lyman M expander die overall is excellent and highly recommended.

The answer for flat-base cast bullets
A flare simply won't cut it when loading flat-case projectiles. The square shoulder produced by this die gives a flat surface for the projectile to mate against prior to seating. The tool also gives a very slight clearance, just larger than the projectile diameter. It is technically proper for ammunition construction.

Lyman M dies are a no brainer.
All smart reloaders buy Lyman “M” dies as a part of their reloading.Pros:1. Relieves stress on brass. Less work hardened your brass is, the increase in reloadings for your brass.2. Pretty inexpensive.3. Built well.CONS1. Lee doesn’t copy the design. 🙃

Worth it.
Helped with my ed brown barrel and bulging cases with cast. Use it before the powder drop station with a lee universal powder through die on a lee auto index turret press

comes apart
works fine until the 2 piece threaded portion falls apart in your press.

A must!!!!! Invaluable!!!! UPDATED TO A 3 STAR
A must have for reloading 45 bullets with flat bases (all I've ever used)! If you're having issues with bullets seating crooked and bulging cases this is the absolute BEST solution! I struggled with flat point (HP) bullets doing this. About one out of 5 would chamber because of the bulge. Set up the M die and haven't had any issues sense. Probably 500 rounds so far.It works well with 450 Bushmaster! You just have to turn the seating stem out almost all the way and perhaps raise the die higher than specified in the press.A dream for 45 ACP!One of those, best die options for reloading. Lee factory crimp die, Forester Seating die, RCBS full length resizing die.AFTER ABOUT A YEAR OF USE THE TIP CAME OUT AND THE THREADS WERE PERMINENTLY DAMAGED. THE DIE IS WORTHLESS. I'VE CONTACTED LYMAN CUSTOMER SERVICE WITHOUT ANY RESPONSE. IT'S A GREAT DIE UNTIL IT ISN'T.

Very useful
Well made. Very useful since it allows very easy alignment of the bullet before seating. Most useful on a progressive press since the bullet stays aligned as the press indexes to the next station. My only complaint is the lock nut on the stem could be more sturdy. It does loosen with use.I currently use it in 40 S&W and 45 ACP but plan to replace all my expanding dies with this model over time.
