It is shaky at certain angles when extended. You can use it as handheld without the long handle.

Q: will it clean hardwood floors without scratching?

I won't recommend to use it on hardwood

Hello yes there is a small black plastic piece on the connector extending pole you have to move it to one side, then you can extend it.
