Worth reading whether you are photographer or (counter-)revolutionary.
John Berger may be the most left-wing intellectual that I admire. In the way of left-wing intellectuals he would have hated me. The first chapter is a commentary on the photograph of the heada Che Guevara. Practically a Hagiography. Read it - but be prepared.

Good read with a different vision of how to interpret a photograph. After reading
If I have started to look at the complexity of meanings in a photograph and have a new understanding of it.

I was very disappointed with this book
I was very disappointed with this book, after admiring and learning much from the same author's "Ways' of Seeing".There is some interesting stuff in here, but it is the history and politics that are interesting. The title is misleading It is not really about photography. He uses the photography as a lead in to comment on what he sees as the problems with society and human relationships in modern times. My first instinct, very uncharitably, was to describe this book as "pseudo-intellectual claptrap". But once you get past expecting it to be a book about photography and accept it for what it is that just isn't true. All the same, I think he could have written more clearly and more understandably and with fewer big words and obscure references to poets and philosophers. There is definitely an air of elitism and showing off in the style of writing (education, vocabulary, learning) that get in the way of the message., and show Mr. Berger in rather a poor light. But at least, and unlike some others that write obscurely (e.g. Barthes and Derrida) is style is not totally impenetrable, and he does have something to say. It just isn't as deep or perceptive as the fancy words would have you believe.

Interessante come sempre
Molto consigliato.
