The Heart Of An Aladdin Kerosene Lamp
If you haven't seen an Aladdin kerosene lamp then you need to.They are a remarkable piece of technology (even though they'vebeen around a long time). If you grew up going on campouts where there was always a kidthat had a gas lantern (remember pumping up the tank pressure?)then the Aladdin kerosene lamp will be a pleasant surprise .....no pumping up the tank, with kerosene you'll be less concernedabout the thing blowing up in your face (pressurized gas makesme nervous), and it's quiet .... I mean really quiet. The 'heart' of the Aladdin kerosene lamp is its mantle. It'soperation is similar to the gas lantern but the Aladdin runson kerosene and it isn't pressurized. The kerosene lamp that you may have had as a child generatedlight by the carbon in the kerosene being hot enough to putout some visible light (though not much). The Aladdin kerosenelamp generates its light by the kerosene flame heating themantle to incandescence; it is a very much more efficientprocess as compared to just a kerosene flame. In several places in their literature Aladdin says that theirlamps put out the light of a 60 Watt light bulb. I don't knowif it's 60 Watts but if not it's close; if you turn up thewick (to increase the flame) the mantle will be glowingwhite. The 'down-side' is that you're dealing with a very hot object;make sure that there are no children who can get near thelamp. Also it will consume oxygen from a room (though I don'tthink too fast as he lamp is very efficient). Interestinglythere is very little smell once the lamp is up to operatingtemperature ... the white hot mantle is apparently very goodat making sure that the kerosene vapor is consumed in thecombustion process. So if you've got an Aladdin lamp that works why would you wantanother mantle ? Easy .... if your present mantle breaks andyou don't have a spare your lamp is unusable and the mantleis very 'brittle'.A new mantle has some kind of 'blue stuff' that it looks tohave been dipped in but the first time you light it up theheat from the kerosene flame burns the coating away andleaves the mantle a whitish color.Once a mantle has been used (it's that whitish color) it isvery brittle; don't try to remove the mantle from where it'slocked-down into the base of the chimney and when you liftoff the chimney to light the lamp try not to jar it as youmight shatter the mantle. So if you plan to use an Aladdin kerosene lamp you'llwant at least one spare (new) mantle for back-up (geta spare chimney too and then you're in pretty good shape).

Model B and C burner.
The media could not be loaded. Works great. Replacement for 1940s railroad lamp model B and C burner. Great for power outages and soft lighting. Here ia an imformative video showing how to burn off the protective blue coating. (Don't worry that is how it is supposed to look)

Good product for a great old high-performance lamp!
I bought one of these initially to get my inherited 1941 Model B Aladdin lamp up and running. The original mantle had disintegrated and the base was corroded and stuck onto the burner, I had a heck of a time getting it off but several minutes of working it with penetrating oil and a pair of pliars did the trick. Also, the original wick was dry and stuck but eventually I managed to get it free and cleaned with my new wick cleaner. Installed the new mantle per the directions, let the oil soak into the old wick for about an hour, and it fired right up. I would guess it puts out the light of a 40 or 50 watt bulb, but I turned mine up too far and sooted about 30% of the mantle. Turned the flame down and the mantle cleared after about 30 minutes, just like I hoped. Now I run it with about 3/4 of the mantle glowing instead of the whole thing, to prevent the sooting, and it still puts out the light of about a 25 watt light bulb. It lights up a large room just enough that you can see everything and walk around without tripping. The sooting might have something to do with the fuel I am currently burning, which is about 1/2 old "odorless" kerosene and the other half, cheap lamp oil. The Model B lamps were designed for pure kerosene. Anyway, this mantle fit my lamp and works as advertised, and is highly recommended. I ordered another one for backup and it looks to be in great condition as well.

Quality control issues
I ordered two of these for two separate lamps. Both had quality issues-- one of them wasn't centered in the frame, but otherwise ok, which could be addressed by bending the frame. The other wasn't glued to the top of the frame at all and swung freely, and isn't shaped so it will fit in the base. That one's unusable and is being returned. Hopefully the replacements are better!
