Is this accurate? I hope so, but the values I get indicate I would be okay behind the wheel even though I don't feel like it would be a good idea. I bought a cheaper unit - no real name or backing by anyone because it was cheap at about $37. It gave me some real high values after a beer or so. It just didn't correlate with how I was feeling after a little bit of drinking. So I decided to buy the Scout from Bactrack because at least it had a way to recalibrate the unit after the sale and it cost a little more. So, how do you test these things? Of course, drink at home and measure your levels a few times. So after a few stout beers, I used the tester and did get a 0.058%, which in most states is passible (but probably not recommended). That seems reasonable, but I certainly wouldn't drive under this level of influence. I guess all these units aren't going to be as robust as the ones used for legal measurements, so I guess its better than nothing. Just remember that some deviation from an official unit is to be expected and make decisions accordingly. It's better than guessing.

It was a gift they like it

I love the design of this unit, but I believe the readings are significantly, inaccurately low. I work in transportation and I have years of experience with other breathalyzers. Although my existing device was working, I wanted an additional device. When I took a reading with both I got a .08 with my existing device and a .03 with the Bactrack. The .08 seemed more accurate based on my years of experience. I tried to return the unit through Amazon but they wouldn’t and directed me to the seller. The seller wouldn’t refund the purchase but agreed to inspect it. I returned it to them and got the unit back a week later with an inspection tag saying it had ‘passed’. It still seemed to read low. I conducted a test where I drank 3 ounces of 40 proof liquor and waited an hour. (I’m an 175lb male). My previous device recorded .05 while the Bactrack indicated .017. I contacted the company. They still wouldn’t refund the device but offered another inspection. Obviously, no one wants perpetual returns for inspections that don’t solve the issue, so I let them know I would be leaving this review. The unit has incredible design, but substantially inaccurately low readings. It’s also unacceptable that you can’t return the item if you’re not satisfied with it. I’m out $90.

I’ve given these (and other models) as gifts to friends for a long time. Everyone has eventually told me that because of these, they have made the decision not to drive. It’s never worth driving impaired, and knowing that my friends have chosen to take a cab/uber/lyft/etc instead of driving gives me a stronger sense of safety for them and others on the road.

I had previously purchased a cheaper tester which was nothing but a toy. It would detect alcohol for real but the numbers were always completely different and inaccurate. I've tested this thing many times and it will shoot me back the same number minus a 1000th or 2 a few minitues after the first test. I would imagine eventually it will have to be recalibrated, they all do. But for now this one seemed really accurate. I have a friend who has an interlock on his car from a DUI he had. I would keep one in the glove box to check the forward you blow into the interlock. they go out of calibration themselves. They charge him a hundred bucks each time he has a blow over some specific number.

I bought this product for my adult children to use for when they go out drinking! And it has worked incredibly well!! It fits in their coat pocket and when they are leaving the bar. They all check their BAC levels to make sure one of them is 0.00. It came with 6 plastic straws. This is a must!!

This breathalyzer is very accurate, warms up quickly, and is very easy to use in a foolproof way. It anayzes fast too so you get results in seconds. I compare it to my Alcomate Premium and whille the results are very close, the Alcomate takes much longer to warm uo and even a little longer to analyze. I will use the Alcomate just periodically to verify the results of the BACtrac and can even pop in a new sensor on the Alcomate should I have concerns about that calibration. Thus for me the BACtrac is for everyday use and the Alcomate is an admittedly expensive backup system to insure I always have a caliibrated result. An Alcomate with a backup sensor iis maybe the more economical way (but still not cheap) to get reliable results but some people say the sensors don't last long and the warmup time of 1 1/4 mnutes is a little tedius.

Slower than the big one but so much easier to carry around and keep track of.
