The purple is not overpowering, just the right amount of ambient lighting. The individual lights are smaller than traditional Christmas string-light bulbs but they are mighty. There are a few different light functions.

I don't think it was mentioned in the product description, but these lights have a built in memory feature. This means you can set a mode on them, unplug the lights from electricity, and when you plug them back in again, it is still on the mode you previously had selected. This is great for using with a smart switch or traditional plug in timer that cuts power off to the string. You can use the string's built in timer of course (6 hrs on 16 off), but the memory feature even after unplugging is great added value.These lights are exactly what I needed and work as described. I've purchased other brands and was disappointed because although they described having the same multiple modes, the entire string was always either on or off (chasing was really just the entire string flashing at once, fading was the entire string fading in and out in unison.) This light string by FairyGlim is a much better product because every light in the strand isn't linked. I like the alternating lights flashing and having modes where some lights twinkle in offset to others. I wrapped mine around Christmas garland and they look fantastic! I'm very pleased with this purchase.
