Great saw, questionable packaging
First things first: This is a really nice miter saw. It runs smoothly, cuts accurately (with the right blade), and stops quickly.I have to mention the packaging though because I almost sent this back because of it. It is packed in a relatively flimsy box that is just too small for the saw. The bevel is set to full left with the sub-fence B in the down position. That means that motor housing and sub-fence B occupy the same space at the same time. sub-fence B breaks. Mine was broken when I opened the box. Look around at the reviews. I'm not the first one to report this. I called Amazon and they said send it back. I thought that if they send me another, there's a good chance it will be broken too. Then I called Hitachi. They shipped me a new sub-fence B under warranty. I installed it in about 30 seconds. (It's 1 screw) I was up and running 1 week after I received the saw from Amazon. So in the grand scheme of things 10 years down the road I won't remember that I had to wait 1 week to use this saw. I'll just remember 10 years (hopefully) of great service from it.So even though it was a bit of a challenge to get up and running, I'm still giving it 5 stars. It was well aligned out of the box. The various adjustments are pretty easy to perform to really dial it in.Someone else mentioned the stock blade not being the best. It's great for chopping 2x4's and such. It doesn't splinter them anyway. I got a ultra fine Bosch blade to do some molding work for our kitchen. It cuts very cleanly. So my advice is, go ahead and get this saw. It's way less expensive than the double bevel DeWalt with a laser. Just be prepared to ask Hitachi for a new sub-fence B...

Great Saw, Great Price
I purchased this Miter saw in Feb '08, and have not been disappointed yet. I did a lot research on miter saws and determined this model had all the features I needed (12" blade, Dual bevel, Laser, Vacuum Hook-up, and fold-out wings) at a cost effective price. I made quite a few trips to Home depot, Sears and Lowes testig out several saws including Ridgid, Dewalt, Bosch and Craftsman. Hearing great things about Dewalt, I immediately tried it out and did not like it at all, since the saw dust guard hit my thumb when I lowered the saw arm(due to the way I grip the handle). Additionally, the cost was way above the other competitors prices for the same saws. Next, the Bosch models were nice but again the price was extreme. The Craftsman almost made it to my list of finalists, but were cut because of the cheap manufacturing and flimsiness. Finally Ridgid put up a great comepetition with the Hitachi. The two reasons I chose the Hitachi over the Ridgid were 1)Price (Ridgid is overpriced, although they supposedly offer a lifetime guarantee on certain parts and 2) Hitachi's laser is activated by switch, whereas Ridgid's laser is activated when you pull the trigger. The reason why that's important to me is because I can line up my lumber for a cut, clamp it down, then pull the trigger as opposed to pulling the trigger, holding the trigger while the blade is spinning and adjust the lumber, lock it down and then cut (safety issue). So far I've cut pine trim with perfect angles, walnut hardwood flooring, and 2X8's and I plan on using this saw to build a deck out of composite lumber. Just a tip, the saw comes with a 40 tooth blade, which isn't good for trim or hardwood floor, I went out and purchased a 90t blade and it cuts perfect. In addition to the blade I bought the UU610 table which fits almost any size piece of lumber and is a snap to put together and wheel around. If you want to try it out in person first, Lowes carries this exact model!

Great Saw
This saw replaces an older Hitachi 10 inch saw without laser guide which I probably had for 20 years or so. This 12 inch saw is just what I needed and I can't say enough about it. It is easy to set up. It was accurate right out of the box. All the miter settings are right on. The saw is powerful to slice through an oak 4x4 with ease. The only reason I did not give it 5 stars is the dust collection. It does have a bag but I wanted to hook it up to a shop vac and none of the connectors I have fit the dust port. I will keep looking. Perhaps Hitachi could make reference to one in their manual if they know of one.All in all a great saw that fits my needs perfectly

Great deal on a very nice saw!
I bought this saw from Big Sky Tool for under $195! Man, this had to be one of the best deals out there! It arrived packed well and in perfect condition like brand new! It came with a pretty nice blade also. The first project I used this for was to cut 4x4s for a privacy fence. It cut those like they weren't even there!I just plugged the saw in, turned on the laser sight and took off! Right out of the box this saw was fully tuned and ready to go! No damaged or missing parts at all. I have purchased several re-conditioned tools of various brands (top brands) and all have been great tools at a great price! They always come with a factory warranty and I would recommend giving them a try! Great job Big Sky Tool and Hitachi!Update:I found myself a bit limited by the 8" cross-cut capacity. I decided I needed to be able to have at least a 12" cross-cut so I could build upper cabinets, cut vinyl siding, house framing, deck building... I checked out all of the sliders (the usual suspects) and you have to sell your first born to afford those! To make a long story short: I bought a 10" dual-bevel slider at (don't laugh) Harbor Freight, used a super coupon and paid $89.99!It cut straight and true right out of the box; it will cross-cut AND bevel a full 12" and you get a pretty decent 60-tooth finishing blade to boot! The saw is very light (half of the Hitachi which is about the weight of a small car) you can carry it to the job site without even breathing hard! True, it doesn't have the features and solid feel of my DW717, but for the price it does a great job-check it out!You too may want another inexpensive, versatile saw, check the Harbor Freight saw out!

A Lot of Saw for the Money.
I wanted to buy a miter saw after first time I used one in a basic woodworking class. About 13 years ago had to put up a fence and had the carpenter leave the top 2 feet open because I knew I didn't want lattice to fill it in. Didn't figure out until a couple weeks ago how I would fill it in. Once I got the idea I knew I would need a miter saw to speed up the cutting process. I'm no expert/carpenter and chose this Hitachi miter saw after looking locally at the home improvement stores, and checking online. Right now it's all about the cross cutting, and when I finish this project I will be looking into ideas for obelisks because that's why I took that woodworking class.

Well made saw.
Great saw. We cut aluminum with it, and has soft start which is perfect. Very well built.
