These are what you need for surf fishing
I've had a pair of Manley's for almost 15 years. They are heavy duty and are just what is needed for removing lures from larger saltwater fish, such as stripers and bluefish. The Teflon finish does wear off after a few years and they rust but remain perfectly useful, and can be rejuvenated with a little WD40 after fishing. When my pair was about 10 years old, I used them to cut off a large hook that was buried in my thumb. I was able to keep fishing the rest of the night with the stub sticking out. After 15 years, the cutting action is finally gone, so I bought another set and look forward to another 15 years (when I finally take them out of the package). These are not the tool you need for cutting braid - use a Swiss army knife for that. But in an emergency if you need to cut a hook these will do it when few others will.

Outstanding pliers!
This is my second pair of Manley Super Pliers. I still have the first pair and they are still going strong 6 years later. I bought a second pair to keep in my car for one reason: To be able cut a 4/0 VMC treble hook should I be unfortunate enough to get one stuck in my finger or hand while fishing. The side cutters on these cut those hooks like butter and the hooks don't affect them at all.I can highly recommend these pliers, especially if you fish. The can save a trip to the ER!

Works.
Works, but is high priced for a pair of fishing pliers.

They aren't Swiss watch precision feeling but feel fine to me
I saw someone commented on the gritty feel, mine don't feel gritty at all. They aren't Swiss watch precision feeling but feel fine to me. I use these for fishing as a lot of others do and have since my grandpas generation. They aren't Van Stalls but seriously $400 for pliers...just seems excessive to me. I'd rather use the Manleys and hose them down at the end of the day. If you primarily fish for smaller fish these probably aren't what you're looking for because the plier head is stubby and you're better served with needle nose pliers. I use them surf fishing for shark and redfish as well as inshore stuff. They do require a little maintenance but not much. If you want sturdy and beefy with side cutters that'll cut braid and hooks these are for you.
