Master Class with Julia Varady: Le Passage du Flambeau

This is a brilliant masterclass which gives a close-up sense of Julia Varady's fantastic singing and also of how a teacher might communicate her art. She is very engaged with the singers she works with - all young women - and the technique involves almost singing along with them, so that the student singing becomes a demonstration and then back again, then stopping for Varady to make a point about the voice or the psychological or musical projection, demonstrating with a radiance of sound that is still completely remarkable. She is also very physical, both in her singing and in the current of open feeling she radiates. The whole thing is seamless, which is interesting to compare to what happens on the piano in this kind of class, where you either have to change seats constantly for the teacher to demonstrate, or have two pianos side by side, which opens up more physical distance. There is a real gain in the closeness and intensity of Varady's teaching; it is as if she is holding the student aloft on a cloud, sustaining, encouraging, adding colour, but above all transmitting her feeling for the music to them. The title - translating as "The passing of the torch" but without the sense of batteries of the English - could hardly be a better description of what happens here, and with the brightest, most beautiful flame!
