Interesting And Confusing All In One
This all-in-one toy contains many things a child will encounter as they grow to the toddler stage. It doesn't require any batteries and, more importantly, it doesn't have any small, detachable parts that could be ingested by small children. All pluses there.Dials that click as they are turned, velcro closures, clock, numbers, a bear maze, a small bell, beads and buckles are all the sort of things kids will experience as they grow older and each of them makes sense and will easily entertain kids by inspiring that "what's this and what does it do" inquisitiveness all children have. Kids will have velcro closures on a jacket or their shoes, a buckle on a backpack and their tiny fingers will learn dexterity as they operate the crank, the gear and the beads. There is plenty to entertain them here and the adults will have a fun time explaining and showing their small children how they operate. And nothing is too complicated that they can't understand how they work. But here's the problem I have with this, and that is the lock and keys and they hook and eye latch.I don't want my toddlers thinking that my keys are toys or that any key will fit any lock. It would be kinda like giving your dog and old show to chew on and then discovering the dog just chewed up your brand new work boots. It teaches what could be reasonably called "a bad habit". I don't want to discover that my toddlers have walked away with my keys and when I find them, discovering what they have stuck them into or the possibility they get the wrong key lodged into a lock they don't fit. That sort of thing could end badly if they choose to stick a key into a wall outlet or break a key off in the wrong lock. The hook and eye latch is something you might typically find securing a screen door, a yard fence gate or a pantry that secures cleaning supplies and the LAST thing I want to teach my toddlers is how to defeat the latch and access something I don't want them to have. Opening the screen door, or accessing the back yard where the swimming pool is located or escaping the back yard could end up with disastrous results. My toddlers will never see the keys that came with this set and I removed the hook from the board and replaced it with an old, antique drawer pull and allow it to spin to simulate a knob of sorts.Great learning and teaching toy. Well constructed, smooth and rounded edges, no splinters and nothing that can be taken off and swallowed but comes with a couple of caveats. Not really a stand alone toy, but something parents can use to engage their toddlers and small children in a teaching and learning experience.
