Robotech Vol. 1

Promising art but doesn't seal the deal
It adheres too closely to the story and the dialog of the original anime. As others have noted, the writing is painful. The writers are assuming the reader is familiar with what has happened in the tv show and can fill in the gaps in their head. It's like the writers are more concerned with hitting certain lines of dialog from the tv show than trying to truly adapt it for a comic retelling. So the story feels just like it is hitting the beats, but not really adding anything interesting. But even then, they manage to miss major beats! An iconic point early in the series has Minmei falling from the sky and Rick diving down, circling her trying to catch her in the cockpit. I realize that in a comic, getting this dynamic would be difficult, but they skipped over it entirely. But that's fine, I realize the medium requires certain cuts to be made, and they are telling a slightly different story, however the next point forces a whole star to be knocked off...My biggest complaint is in drawing the battroid mode. In the 89 pages and 5 issues that this first volume covers, there are only 2 pages with the mechs in robot mode. And what should be a dynamic full page hero shot of Roy swooping into the rescue, fully transformed, comes across looking more like a toy that was stood up in front of the artists desk and used as reference. Everything is stiff.I was at first excited to start seeing how a modern comic retelling of Robotech would be, especially since the American take on it focuses more on the war drama than the singing, but so far its first showing is not a strong one.

The butchering of a beloved franchise
As a Robotech and Macross fan of 35 years and having watched the series over 50 times, I was utterly disappointed in the portrayal of the characters. The writers and artists did not understand the intrinsic personality traits of the characters and how they related to each other. Roy would never arrest his little brother Rick unless it was a direct order. He, himself, gave the order. The artists drew all the characters faces like they were emo. The attempt to become gritty destroyed the opportunity for us to like and care for the characters. On top of this, the unnecessary changes to the iconic plot points was hard to stomach. I stop reading several times. I was excited to see a graphical revival of this franchise, but whatever this is, it is not Robotech.

Great start to a Very Well Done Reboot...
This retelling of Robotech is very well done, but it does take a few issues to really get going, things really start to go a different direction in the next collection, but its a good start. I do like the art, but I get why some fans have a problem with it not having a "Manga" art style, it does take some getting use to a more realistic version of the art, but it is really easy to tell who is who, so I do not have a problem with it.

Brilliant work, but too short. Not interested in paying for another long, drawn out series.
The artwork, writing, coloring and lettering are all superb. The book is disappointing in its length, however, since only 89 of the 112 pages are devoted to the story at all. The rest is filler: pointless whole-page graphic separators unconnected to the story, sketches, process, and bios. Paid a lot for this, but there are already 26 used copies for less available on Amazon, as of the day of its first release. The storyline is too short. Bad value for the bucks. Too quickly read and discarded. It will take dozens of these to ever get into the story far enough to make for interesting reading, but this is the last one I buy, if it's meant to be a series.

Art needs a bit of work
That’s just my opinion. Story grew on me and I see the potential. Worth a read and far better than the stuff at marvel and dc. Give it a try, it will pass the time like any story should

Great series reboot
Love the new reimagined artwork for this reboot. The robotech story never grows old. Courage, action, drama, love triangles always make good stories.

A new spin on a clssic series!
This version of Robotech is a fresh new start on a classic anime and book series, and my brother enjoys it cause it shows a different version of what he knows about Robotech, which he and i are fans of.

Nice reboot
Its a nice reboot of a classical series. Still brings good memories of the original while still being relevant.

Worth a pick up
Fun book, quite enjoyed the read. Has a nice spin on things and the characters are well developed whilst having an interesting antagonist and art to boot.

Its a retelling, but really only old fans will appreciate it
While I overall like the idea of an updated retelling of the classic Macross portion of Robotech and feel that the story presented is sound in its logic, I sadly am of the opinion that if you did not already know the story of Macross you would be highly disappointed in this retelling. The comic itself has decent enough art, but the plot and layout are disjointed and do not flow evenly, thus if you were not a fan of the series already, very little of the Titan comics would make sense. Worse yet is that the parts that are skipped are the small subtle nuances of story, the comradery of its cast, and similar elements that made Robotech such an enjoyable and apathetic story for the audience and this is something that cannot be overlooked nor forgiven.
