Recoton DVD1000 S-Video/Stereo RCA Audio/Video Selector

I bought this selector several years back, and it has worked flawlessly. Video and Audio come through without issues. It doesn't take up much space, and is light weight. Also a plus is that it doesn't require an AC Adapter or any power at all.

thin and flimsy plastic casing but it works well. been using it for a few months with no problems. I wouldn't plug and unplug cables into it too often but if you're going to set it up and leave it alone it should work for you.

Recently, I've been trying to upgrade from the standard composite and get better picture quality for my various old gaming consoles, and after reading about how S-video can give a boost to consoles like the Sega Saturn and the Nintendo 64, I've invested and found decent cables for these consoles, but my TV can only accept one s-video input at a time. I've purchased various composite devices and cables over the years, including several switchers, and I've never had any complaints, so it's surprising to me how difficult it really is to find quality products for S-Video. I suppose it's seen as a dead format, but there is a tangible improvement over composite with decent cables, and sadly, this switch box does not allow for the benefit to truly show. On the plus side, it does not require any external power, but that's about the only positive I can say here. Both the N64 and the Saturn had interference and checker-boarding when connected through this device, and I confirmed that these artifacts were not visible when connected directly to my TV. I also tried two different s-video cables, both a Recoton branded cable and a third party cable, and the device did not transmit an acceptable video signal with either. Furthermore, I could not get audio to output through the port on the front of the switcher at all. It does seem to work as expected for RCA video and audio, but I already have multiple RCA inputs on my TV, as well as an RCA switcher, so this wasn't much consolation. This may work for some people who just want to connect several S-Video and RCA devices to one TV, but if you're looking to maintain signal quality, forget it. You're better off manually switch the cables or paying more for something better.

This product does the job fine. For the money, you can't really beat it. Only one small problem with this switch. Sometimes, the buttons don't click in all of the way. For ex.: You may think that you selected button 3, but you may have to go back and press it again harder to select the equipment hooked up to that channel. Other than that, it's a good product.
