I've been waiting for this translation.
Absolutely gorgeous; a magic system that blows others out of the water & fascinating world building. The art alone could carry this but the story & pacing doesn't let you down. One of my favourite running stories!

Dissatisfied and disappointed
Very disappointed with this book. Only a few colour plates at the front of the book, the rest is black and white drawings on cheap nasty paper, the book is small, I expected a larger format more consistent with graphic novels. Bought as a present for my grandson which I will still give to him but definitely not worth the money.

It's a Kind of Magic!
I am in love with this series.I only picked up this first volume on a whim and I am so glad that I did. Everything from the world to the characters and especially the achingly beautiful artwork just make me want to clutch this manga to my chest and never let it go. The story follows a young girl named Coco who adores magic and longs to become a witch. Unfortunately in this world you have to be born a witch, or do you? One day Coco gets the chance to spy on a witch as they cast one of their spells and realises that all you need to do is draw the right symbols (as long as you also have the right tools and a knowledge of what to draw). Coco delighted by this revelation, but things take a turn for the worse when a spell she casts quickly gets out of control. Now Coco's only hope is to become a witch and find a way to undo the damage she's done. The story of this first volume is fairly basic, but that's all it really needs to be. I'm already falling for all of these characters, especially Coco. She's energetic and cheerful while also having her moments of doubt and guilt. You can't help but root for her and she really is the embodiment of the obsessive fervour of those who want to create, while also recognising that this is not an overnight thing.I also really love the magic system this world chooses to go with. Magic based on calligraphy and specially created items isn't a new concept, but I really like how its done here. For one I love the design of things like the floating carriages and the water balls, the hover boots are also really neat. What I admire most though is how much thought has been put into how the system works, with a clear and concise explanation given in the book. It has a lot of potential and I look forward to seeing what else can be done with it.Lastly, the artwork is stunning. I'd recommend this book based on that alone. The detail put into the world and the designs of characters and objects, it's just beautiful to look at. The panels flow effortlessly into one another and it really knows when to zoom in on something or when to pull back and just let a scene feel big for a moment. If you're a fan of fantasy, or just really good artwork, pick this up!
