These larger pieces of rock wool work really well in imitating glowing embers, with the edges flickering. Very good product to fill in between and under artificial gas logs. Provides a more realistic natural looking fire, and much better looking than just the vermiculite on the volcanic rock.

This stuff works great. Given you refurbish the natural gas fireplace once every few years, I wasn't tuned into the details. Turns out, 6 ounces of this stuff would supply the whole neighborhood. Bottom line is it works great, but you must carefully tear off very small pieces of this "wool" and carefully place it around the area where flame shows during operation of your gas log fireplace. I tore off tiny pieces, spread them around, turned on the fireplace, took a look, turned it off and kept repeating this until I got the look I wanted. Very nice. But I maybe used 1/2 ounce out of the six ounce bag. So I gave it 4 stars instead of 5. This bag will last a life time. Maybe they wouldn't make any money on a two ounce bag but that's all you'll need. As for the effect of glowing embers, excellent. The product makes the look much better. As for lava rock, this wool is much more important. I bought and installed both. When you're 5-15 feet from your operating fireplace, you can't see details, only the glowing wool. Try this first. Then lava rock if necessary. The rock may disperse the gas better but this wool is the show.

Does as advertised - adds realism to to your gas log heater. There is enough in the bag to last a decade.HERE IS THE CAUTION: Less is better! I way overdid it and wound up removing half of it.DO NOT place this material directly OVER-TOP the manifold burner ports! Around the sides or in front of the ports is sufficient!. Less is more in terms of the health and longevity of your heater!WHAT HAPPENS? When placed directly over the gas ports, you will impede combustion and may cause gas burning inside the manifold- NOT GOOD. This will burn up the ports and manifold which will then need to be replaced- New manifolds are not cheap (like $300-$600 plus service required for a complete overhaul). If the ports are impeded, you can also expect shooting from incomplete combustion, noted by excessive yellow flame.Should you notice a noise lake “Ba Whoomp” in combustion of a cold stove, you are getting combustion inside the manifold. Shut it down and restart the heater. This can be an issue if you are unable to supervise the stove when it lights via a thermostat.TRUST ME ON THIS SAGE ADVICE. I have a 22 year old Jotul- Free standing gas log heater. Its been a gem up until this year. I noticed excessive shooting and discovered a 3” long burned out area ahead of the pilot. Pre ignition. The bad news being that replacement manifolds are N.A. The solution being to fabricate a saddle to fit over the burned out area, using 304 stainless steel. Port size and pattern precisely duplicated. I have 3-4 days into this repair… which fortunately has worked fine so far. Option B? A new stove. I rely on this heater for home heating.Both decorative and functional- used 24/7 all winter. It still has life.Check your heater and have it inspected annually, especially if it sees full service during heating season. This “glow wool” could shorten the manifold life if overdone and impeding the manifold gas ports. There is always a down side and this is one you need to be aware, of.

My fireplace never had rock wool! Super easy to place and recommend pulling it apart into tiny pieces for the best effect. It breaks the flame and adds the smoldering look that is realistic. I placed it all over the grate.
