Not optimum for cymbals, but great for toms
Up front: if you are looking for mallets that you will mainly use on cymbals I recommend the Zildjian model that has yarn heads.I purchased these because there a few songs in my band's setlist that require mallets (the most prominent one is Blue Bayou.) My toms are configured with Remo Coated Ambassadors, and the small, dense heads on these mallets give a nice tone when the toms are tuned medium high. Perfect for the songs that I perform. The beater heads on the mallets seem sturdy enough, but since I am using them for four songs, and am not gigging much these days I cannot be specific regarding longevity.Having a dual purpose mallet that can be flipped and used as a stick is a nice touch, but frankly not a feature that I much use. I am adept at switching between mallets and sticks, so it's moot. However, while the "handles" are thicker than I would use for drumsticks, they are pretty thin when compared to other mallets. Factor that into your decision. The feature that drew me to these mallets, and why I personally rated them so highly, is the small, dense beater heads and the tone I get from them. Very staccato, but you can still control the dynamics.

I like them.
I was looking for the old swizzle sticks with the felt ball stuck on the butt end of the stick. These are a little different design. It's a 5a with the felt added extending past the butt of the stick. The felt is like a general timpani mallet but smaller diameter. They are really good for tom and cymbal rolls, timpani too.The stick end is a normal 5a. It's good for really quick changes. But, like all combination sticks, the balance is odd.I prefer the Peter Erskine model tips on cymbals. It would be really nice if Vic Firth would make a Duo model out of those. And maybe figure out a way to balance it like a normal stick, that's always been my problem with combo sticks.I'd also like to try a duo with wire brushes and soft mallets.I still give 5 stars.I use them for musical theater. Toms, cymbals, timpani, electronic pads to minimize pad sound.

Hope the felt stays on, overall great stick!
Love them. The added weight does not make the regular side feel out of balance. Only reason it doesn't get 5 stars is the felt part feels like it could fall off, I think the construction is a good idea, seems like the wood is a single piece, including the ball shape of the mallet, with a piece of felt glued or sewed onto the wooden ball. Its a good idea, but the felt does not seem like its attached well. I had promark sticks with mallets on the end. Their design was different, the mallet head was screwed on to the stick, but I don't like the promark feel, the sticks are so top heavy, better for heavy hitters I suppose. Overall a great desgin! Swells and toms sound fantastic, mellows out the snare. good prices too!

Exactly what you should expect..
Perfectly paired. The hardness of the black coat finish is to be expected, and it produces a fat crack rim shot and a nice stiff feel to the sticks. Heavier than a natural stick, and less resonance to the feel. Use it as a tool for the touch and sound you desire, and you will be satisfied.

Great Sticks!
I've been using the Vic Firth 5As for several years now as my primary stick. They have great weight and balance and the wood tips don't create that overly bright sound you get with plastic/nylon tips. I play in a classic rock band so I need something to play a wide range of stuff from the Beatles to Led Zeppelin without constantly changing sticks. These do the job. The 4 for 3 deal brings the cost down to just over $7 per pair which is a great deal. Highly recommend these sticks and this deal.

Nice for swells
I love the Vic Firth T2 for cymbal swells, but when my brother in law wanted some better sticks for swells (than his cheap mallets), the T2s were a bad price. These were still the normal price so I thought I would try them out before gifting them to him. They make for a very nice cymbal swell and were an excellent alternative to the T2s. He loves them!
